FC Barcelona could prematurely terminate Manchester United star Marcus Rashford’s loan

Marcus Rashford’s move to Barcelona was one of the biggest stories of the summer. After spending half a season at Aston Villa while searching for a way out of Manchester United, he was at times even forced to train away from the first team.

Rashford had openly expressed his desire to play for Barcelona, and eventually, Hansi Flick pushed to make the deal happen. For United, it meant shedding his hefty wages, while Barcelona gained a forward expected to rediscover his spark. The agreement also included an option to make the transfer permanent next year for around £30 million.

Difficult start at Barcelona

However, the start has not gone as expected for either club. The Mail reported on September 6 that Barcelona’s management had anticipated Rashford would make an immediate impact, but so far he has looked completely out of place. On the pitch, he has often appeared hesitant and uncertain, at times almost invisible in matches. If this trend continues, the 27-year-old could be forced to return to Old Trafford before the season ends.

Club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco were never fully convinced about the deal, and that hesitation is now beginning to show. The biggest issue is that if Barcelona decide to send the Englishman back early, they would have to pay Manchester United around £4.3 million. It is also worth noting that Barcelona’s first choice had been Nico Williams, but when Athletic Bilbao offered him a new contract, the club turned to Rashford instead. For now, Hansi Flick’s only option is to give him more time, but signs of improvement will need to appear quickly.

The way forward for United and Rashford

If Rashford does return, the situation will be extremely uncomfortable for Manchester United. His relationship with Ruben Amorim is already fractured, and the club had been counting on Barcelona making his move permanent next year. Should he come back, United would either need to find him a new club or once again separate him from the first team. The only silver lining for United would be financial relief, as Barcelona would owe a penalty fee of around €5 million.

From Rashford’s perspective, the story becomes even more complicated. He had personally pushed for the Barcelona move in hopes of reviving his career and strengthening his chances of making England’s World Cup squad. If this transfer fails, his confidence will take a major hit, making it even harder for him to rediscover his form.

It is still early in the season, and Hansi Flick has publicly defended him. However, Flick’s patience will not be endless, and if Rashford fails to rediscover his spark in the coming months, Barcelona may be forced to send him back. To avoid that outcome, he needs to regain confidence, fully adapt to Flick’s system, and deliver consistent performances. With his World Cup ambitions on the line, immediate improvement is essential.

This is a testing period for both Rashford and Manchester United. The club already has difficult decisions to make, including whether to extend the contract of on-loan Jadon Sancho to avoid losing him for free, and whether to secure Harry Maguire’s future before his deal expires next year. These uncertainties only add to Rashford’s dilemma. If he cannot prove his worth at Barcelona, his future at Old Trafford will remain insecure as well. For the 27-year-old, this must be seen as a chance to rebuild his career, not waste it.
