Having spent the first many weeks of the summer transfer window focussing on making reinforcements in attack, with not long left to go for the 2025/26 season to kick-start, it is time for Manchester United to shift their attention to other positions they potentially need to improve.

Of course, the club continues to keep searching for a new number nine but a new midfielder could also be on the cards. Although Man Utd have a number of decent options in the squad for that position, it is worth mentioning that most of them are very similar in profile and there is a lack of variety.

Now, as per Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United have now made a £34m offer to sign talented Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP. The 26-year-old has previously played under Ruben Amorim.

The Hjulmand – Amorim relationship

The report mentions that the midfielder shares a very good relationship with Amorim. Hjulmand was a mainstay in the playing XI under the Portuguese tactician during his time managing Sporting CP and the duo could reunite and be a part of the project at Old Trafford.

Predominantly a play-breaker who excels playing as a defensive midfielder, Hjulmand also has the ability to dictate play. He isn’t exactly expansive with his passing and likes to keep things simple, making him the perfect player to pair with someone creative like Bruno Fernandes or Mason Mount.

If Man Utd were to sign Hjulmand this summer, he would be the perfect player to rotate with Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguayan, who has also played at Sporting CP before, has been at the Red Devils since last summer but is yet to fully adapt to the rigours of the Premier League.

An alternative to Manuel Ugarte?

Ever since Amorim took over as the manager of Manchester United, he tended to use Casemiro in a more box-to-box role and not necessarily as an anchor. The experienced Brazilian grew into his new role and impressed with his performances towards the end of last campaign.

Hjulmand has made a name for himself by playing impressively for Sporting CP in recent seasons. He is said to have a release clause of close to around £69m on his contract with the Portuguese club, although they are willing to agree a much lower fee closer to £43m.

If Man Utd want to sign the 26-year-old Dane this summer, they might have to increase their bid. The coming days would provide a clearer picture on how things play out on this front and if Hjulmand is seen wearing a Red Devils jersey next season.
