Manchester United make decision on Lisandro Martinez’s contract

Lisandro Martinez is in the final year of his contract at Manchester United with much focus being shed on whether the club will decide to keep him or not.

Martinez started last Sunday’s Premier League game against Ipswich Town, underlining his importance to the side, although spent large portions of last season out injured with several injury problem, including one to his calf.

Other central defenders, including Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, moved into the side to cover for Martinez whilst he was injured although, at the same time, have proved their talent whilst subsequently aiding their own cases for future matches.

That has left manager Michael Carrick in a difficult situation where he has to balance the happiness of several central defenders, all of which want to play consistently for the club.

With Martinez in the final year of his contract, some reports had suggested that he was in a battle to save his Manchester United career.

New reports, from Samuel Luckhurst on The Sun website, have hinted towards the opposite, however, with United now expected to extend the World Cup winner’s contract by a further year through triggering the one-year extension in his deal according to the journalist.

Luckhurst has also said that United are unlikely to let Lisandro Martinez leave next summer, although it remains unclear what the club’s plans are.

Extending Martinez’s contract by a further year would provide the Argentine international with further chances to play for Manchester United whilst subsequently proving the club’s trust in him.

Today’s fixture against Everton gives the 28-year-old another opportunity to prove himself whilst  also gives him a chance to underline his starting position in Michael Carrick’s side.

If he is successful in delivering in that, it could further push the club’s confidence in the central defender and move up an extension on Martinez’s contract too.
