The transfer window closed for Premier League clubs on September 1, but various leagues around Europe still have their windows open, which means that English teams can still sell or loan players out. Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement with Trabzonspor over a loan transfer for Andre Onana for this season.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that a verbal agreement has been reached between Manchester United and Trabzonspor for Onana to join the Turkish club on loan this season. However, the final decision is still up to the goalkeeper, as they await his green light.
David Ornstein reports that Onana’s representatives had checked with the club whether they should look at exit options on August 24. However, they were told not to, as the Cameroonian was “a part of [Ruben] Amorim’s plans”. It appears that the club, or Amorim, have changed their minds, potentially due to the incoming of Senne Lammens on Deadline Day.
Trabzonspor will not pay any loan fee for this move, but there will be no option to buy at the end of the season. They want Onana to be available for their next fixture on September 14 in a tough match against Fenerbahce.
With Lammens coming in for almost £20 million, it seems apparent that the 23-year-old will be United’s new starting goalkeeper, for the long-term. However, Altay Bayindir hasn’t looked great as a back-up in United’s opening three fixtures, making an error leading to goal against Arsenal, and parrying the ball straight into Jaidon Anthony’s path as the Red Devils scraped past Burnley with a 3-2 win.
Furthermore, Onana’s ability to play out from the back cannot be understated, and whilst he hasn’t looked exceptional with his shot-stopping, Amorim may miss his skill with the ball at his feet.
The move may, however, bring some peace of mind to the dressing room as the player who had to deny that he was “disrespectful” can often be a liability.
