The rise of elite youth tournaments across Europe has given clubs a new stage to measure their future stars, and Manchester United are once again preparing to test their academy against the very best later this year.
There has been a growing emphasis at Old Trafford on developing the next generation, especially under the current structure.
United’s academy has already produced standout talents in recent seasons, and with the club pushing to return to consistent dominance at senior level, performances at youth tournaments are now seen as part of that wider rebuild.
One of those talents has been Kobbie Mainoo, who recently put pen to paper by signing a 5-year deal with his boyhood club.
That broader vision will now extend to one of the most exciting youth competitions on the calendar, as attention turns to the return of the Virgil’s Legacy Trophy.
The U-13 tournament, which will be held in Tilburg on 12–13 September 2026, continues to grow in stature and will now feature an expanded field of 16 elite academies from around the world, and Manchester United will once again be apart of that as announced on the tournament’s website.
Named after Virgil van Dijk, the competition is played in the city where the Dutch defender began his professional journey, with matches taking place at the Koning Willem II Stadion.
The tournament was first introduced in the last year as part of an initiative to honour Van Dijk’s legacy while providing a global platform for youth development, and it has steadily gained recognition as one of the premier academy events in Europe.
Previous editions have seen top clubs such as Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, and AC Milan compete, with the level of competition increasing each year.
Last year’s tournament showcased some of the brightest emerging talents in world football, with European heavyweights battling it out.
Liverpoo’s U13 side lifted the first-ever Virgil’s Legacy Trophy in September 2025, edging out Feyenoord 2–1 in the Tilburg final after a commanding 5–2 semi-final victory over Manchester City.
United’s involvement signals their continued commitment to competing with the very best academies, especially as clubs like Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also set to feature in this year’s expanded edition.
This year’s lineup features an impressive mix of elite academies, including Liverpool, Barcelona, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Ajax, Galatasaray, Arsenal, Feyenoord, AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven, Southampton, Celtic, Groningen, and Willem II all set to take part.
From a Manchester United perspective, the tournament offers more than just silverware, as it provides a glimpse into the club’s future pipeline while also testing players against different styles and systems from across Europe.
There is also a growing belief internally that success at youth level can translate into stronger first-team foundations, particularly with the club aiming to build a sustainable model rather than relying solely on the transfer market.
With the competition taking place over two intense days, the format ensures high-pressure matches that mirror senior football environments, giving young players valuable experience early in their careers.
As United continue to rebuild both on and off the pitch, their presence in Tilburg later this year will be another step in shaping the next generation tasked with restoring the club’s long-term dominance.
