Manchester United put a side out that beat Sunderland in a five-goal thriller on Sunday, sending them through to the quarter-finals.
It was a game where hard work was rewarded, and despite conceding shortly after their second goal, United refused to capitulate.
Manchester United’s U21s put out a strong side against Sunderland’s in the Premier League 2 play-offs Round of 16, with Shea Lacey and Jack Fletcher starting despite both being on the bench for the senior side against Chelsea on April 18.
This could hint towards the inclusion of at least one of Patrick Dorgu or Leny Yoro on Monday night against Brentford, who have both returned to training with the squad.
Manchester United U21s XI: Murdock, Kamason, Aljofree, Armer, Kukonki, T. Fletcher, Moorhouse, J. Fletcher, Lacey, Obi, Musa.
Subs: Helafu, Byrne-Hughes, Leon, Thwaites, Lusale.
Head coach of the U18 side Darren Fletcher watched on and shouted, “Well done, Chido,” to United’s young striker Obi following his goal, according to Manchester Evening News. This came shortly before Fletcher’s son Jack scored in front of his Father to make it 2-0.
Sunderland refused to say die, scoring a goal in the final third of the game to make it 3-2, but despite a late push from the Black Cats, United kept them at bay.
Chido Obi, Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey all got on the scoresheet in United’s win.
Despite Shea Lacey’s inclusion in the match, he is expected to remain in the first team squad on Monday night against Brentford, reports SullyTalkz on X.
His excellent performance in the U21 game and exciting cameo appearances for the senior side are being rewarded with more chances to shine.
There could be fewer spots in the senior squad on Monday, with the impending returns of defenders Leny Yoro and Patrick Dorgu, but Lacey’s attacking brilliance is something unique to him and is making him stand out.
It was another great day for United’s academy, as they approach another possible trophy, this time in the PL2.
