Manchester United set to confirm new head coach

Manchester United are preparing to confirm another important addition to their coaching structure as they experience a reshaping of the coaching staff at Old Trafford.

Carrick has already placed his own stamp on United following his appointment as manager, with the club seeking to ensure he has the right staff in place ahead of the new season.

That work has involved changes across both the first-team and academy departments, with Travis Binnion having already been promoted into Carrick’s senior setup on a permanent basis after stepping up to support in the wake of Ruben Amorim’s departure.

As such, his step up to the first team coaching staff has left a whole which is now set to be filled in the Untied academy.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are close to formally announcing Adam Lawrence as their permanent Under-21 head coach.

The 40-year-old took interim charge of the Under-21s in January after Binnion stepped up to work with the first team during Darren Fletcher’s spell as caretaker manager.

Adam Lawrence had only left United seven months earlier, having previously worked as the club’s Under-18 manager, but returned to Carrington following a spell with Newcastle United.

His familiarity with United’s academy and its young players was considered an important factor when he was initially brought back on an interim basis.

Lawrence subsequently strengthened his case for the permanent position by leading the Under-21s to the Premier League 2 play-off final, where they suffered a narrow defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Academy chiefs are understood to have viewed his second-half spell in charge as a success, prompting talks over keeping him in the role beyond the end of last season.

Although United have not yet made a public announcement, Lawrence has continued to oversee the Under-21s throughout pre-season.

The report adds that confirmation of his permanent appointment remains on track despite the two-month delay.
