For a club of Manchester United’s stature, occupying 16th place in the Premier League is nothing short of a catastrophe. A side once synonymous with dominance now finds itself precariously close to the relegation zone, a situation that has set off alarm bells throughout the club.
While United’s Europa League campaign has been a rare bright spot, with a final against Tottenham in Bilbao offering a glimmer of silverware, their domestic form has been a nightmare. Old Trafford, once a fortress, has become a venue of consistent disappointment, with the team struggling to impose themselves against even the most modest opposition.
Harry Maguire, one of the dressing room captains, has had no qualms about taking (h/t Sky Sports via Youtube) the blame on behalf of the group. In an unvarnished interview, the England centre-back acknowledged that the team had failed to deliver. He pointed the finger directly at the players as the main culprits for the disaster. Maguire said that looking at the table is embarrassing, that there is no possible justification for the level they have displayed on the field this season.
For him, changing the coach can no longer be an excuse. They have had many opportunities to win games, and they didn’t do it. He also accepted that the constant changes in the eleven have affected consistency, but insisted that the squad should have been up to the task. In his opinion, United players have failed to meet the minimum standards required to represent the club. His sincerity contrasts with the silence of other teammates. In the midst of a fractured dressing room, his voice has gained strength, and such statements are rare in the midst of such a turbulent season.
“It’s been really tough in the Premier League; we can’t hide away from that. It’s been nowhere good enough for this club. To look at the table, it’s embarrassing, especially for us players. Us players, we have got to take responsibility, because we’ve had two managers and loads of opportunities to win football matches and we just haven’t done it well enough this season.”
Maguire is right to point the finger at the players. Football is not won by tactics or signings alone. Attitude and responsibility are key. In this case, United’s squad has failed in the basics: commitment, consistency and reaction. Good names and individual talent are not enough, as collective character is needed. However, pointing fingers is not enough. The club must make some strong decisions to come back better next season.
This summer could be a watershed moment for Manchester United. At least five or six players who have failed to deliver or show sufficient hunger should be shown the exit door. For Ruben Amorim, the mandate is clear: redefine the squad with a more balanced, competitive lineup.
The needs are glaring. A dominant midfielder capable of controlling games, wingers who can consistently create danger, and a reliable striker who can finish chances, these are essential for United to avoid another dismal season. But it’s not just about bringing in quality; it’s about defining roles. Amorim must step up and establish clarity regarding each player’s position and responsibilities.
