Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has been struggling for consistent minutes under his belt at Old Trafford. Ruben Amorim has reduced the academy graduate to a bits-and-pieces player at M16, and this has brought through a lot of frustration in the Englishman.
There were reports going around in the summer window suggesting that Mainoo is open for a possible Carrington exit. The 29-year-old wanted to get more regular minutes on the pitch to have the best chance to be named in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
And while Ruben Amorim was open to having Mainoo out through the doors at M16, Sir Jim Ratcliffe ended up vetoing his stay given the long-term upside of his qualities in the roster.
This long-term upside is exactly why Spanish giants Real Madrid are said to be interested in signing the England international. And the 20-year-old who is already fighting the pecking order at M16 is said to be open to moving to Los Blancos, according to a recent report by Defensa Central.
The report goes on to claim that Mainoo at the moment is focused on starting to be an integral presence in the current roster at M16. We have also seen him take measures off the field in order to do so. But if that doesn’t happen, he will be looking for a ‘way out’.
And with Xabi Alonso’s side reportedly in the market to get a new midfielder, they ‘could consider his possible arrival’.
There is no doubt about the quality that Mainoo possesses. He is more of a technical presence who is quite flowy with the ball at his feet.
But given the fact that he has been competing with Bruno Fernandes for minutes after the Portuguese was pulled into a deeper role by Ruben Amorim. It does raise questions about how many minutes he would get at M16 (at least under the current management).
It is to be seen how the minutes start to accumulate from now to the winter window. It is highly possible that Mainoo will push for a move away if he is not assured minutes by January. He has an opportunity to be on that flight representing the Three Lions at the World Cup, and he would expect to fight a fair fight for a spot.
