Manchester United vs Manchester City postponed

Manchester United and Manchester City are due to meet tomorrow at Old Trafford in this season’s first Manchester derby.

Michael Carrick and Enzo Marseca, meeting for first time as permanent managers of the two sides, both led their sides to wins in the Champions League in midweek.

United’s win, against Sabah at Old Trafford, was convincing and pushed the team up to fourth in the league-phase table whilst City’s victory also pushed them into the top eight of the table.

Both sides have been preparing for the game tomorrow, although six players including Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte are set to miss the fixture with ongoing injury problems.

Away from the first-team, both sides’ Under-21s teams were set to face off against each other today.

That will no longer occur, with United confirming on their official website that the derby had been postponed.

A statement reads: “Manchester United Under-21s’ derby match against Manchester City has been postponed.

“The Premier League 2 fixture was due to take place on Saturday evening (12 September) at the City Football Academy.

“A new date for the match will be confirmed in due course.”

For supporters of Manchester United’s and Manchester City’s first-team respectively, relief may be the feeling with the match at Old Trafford still set to go ahead as planned.

This news comes as incredibly disappointing news for both Manchester United Under-21s and Manchester City Under-21s, meanwhile, who were looking to build on their good starts to the season.

United, led by Adam Lawrence, have won both of their opening two games of the Premier League 2 season, against Ipswich Town and Leicester City, scoring nine goals in the process whilst conceding just one.

City, on the other hand, were victorious against Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-21s in Premier League 2 although did lose to Nottingham Forest Under-21s last weekend, opening the door for Manchester United to potentially expose their rivals further.

With the match now postponed, much focus will turn towards looking out for when the match will be rescheduled for.

Manchester City Under-21s involvement in the EFL Trophy, a competition United decided not to participate in, limits the amount of spots where the match can be slotted in, whilst this postponement could mean a tighter schedule further down the line.
