Manchester United's Mason Greenwood released on bail pending further investigation

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been released on bail pending further investigation coming off his initial arrest on Sunday amid allegations he raped and abused a woman.

United suspended Greenwood after the disturbing accusations that included images and at least one audio file spread throughout social media, and he had remained in custody until it was learned he was further arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

"A 20-year-old man arrested (on Sunday 30 January 2022) on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation," Greater Manchester Police explained on Wednesday, according to Sky Sports.

As part of his suspension, United said Sunday that Greenwood "will not return to training or play matches until further notice," and the club reiterated "its strong condemnation of violence of any kind" in a brief statement released Tuesday.

Nike suspended its relationship with the footballer earlier this week, and EA Sports removed him "from active squads in 'FIFA 22'" and also prevented his likeness "from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) packs and Ultimate Draft."

As things currently stand, Greenwood is signed with United through the 2024-25 season. Per Charlotte Harpur of The Athletic, neither the player nor anybody representing him has publicly responded to the accusations.
