Manchester United’s midfield has undergone significant changes in the last few days.
The arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have already strengthened the middle of the park following Casemiro’s departure, while the club are still expected to add a third midfielder before the transfer window closes.
However, one current United midfielder now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a devastating setback on international duty.
Manchester United have officially confirmed on their website that Manuel Ugarte has undergone successful surgery after sustaining a serious knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup.
The club announced the update in an official statement, confirming the midfielder will now begin his rehabilitation programme under the guidance of United’s medical department.
United said, “Everyone at Manchester United wishes Manuel well for his recovery and will be supporting him every step of the way.”
The injury occurred during Uruguay’s World Cup clash against Spain when Manuel Ugarte landed awkwardly before collapsing to the turf.
The 25-year-old was eventually stretchered off the pitch in visible distress.
Subsequent scans confirmed one of the worst possible outcomes for any footballer, with Ugarte suffering a torn knee ligament.
The timing could hardly have been worse.
Manchester United had been open to moving the midfielder on this summer as part of their ongoing rebuild, but the injury has effectively ended any possibility of a transfer during the current window.
Ugarte broke his silence with an emotional message on X before his surgery.
“A few days have passed since everything happened. Suffering the most serious injury a footballer can face in one of the most important matches in my country’s history, and seeing it end this way without being able to stay on the pitch and support my teammates until the final whistle, is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
United have already responded to the changing situation in midfield.
Although his immediate focus is now solely on recovery, Manchester United will hope Ugarte can return stronger after what has become one of the toughest moments of his career.
