Enzo Maresca is taking his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s game against Ajax in the Champions League tomorrow night, and he began with some team news.
The coach had changed up his midfield for the game on Saturday, resting Moises Caicedo and leaving out Enzo Fernandez entirely. While Caicedo ended up playing the second half, Enzo’s issue was more of a mystery. He came back early from Argentina duty with reports of swelling in his knee, but still wasn’t fit to play.
Maresca’s latest report doesn’t fil us with confidence either. While he insists the midfielder isn’t seriously injured, he also admits that the team are going to have to manage this problem:
“Enzo took part in the session yesterday, we have one more session and we will see what we do tomorrow. It’s not something to be worried about but we just have to protect Enzo,” the Italian coach said.
We imagine it will be Romeo Lavia and Andrey Santos starting tomorrow, with Moises Caicedo ready to come off the bench again.
If Maresca is feeling less confident, he can always start Caicedo and bring him on later. Given Santos and Lavia are both fit and in need of minutes, and given the opposition, we can’t imagine we will see Enzo if there is any question about his fitness.
Pedro Neto is one player who has been fit and firing – and he played a crucial role in our win at the weekend, as was pointed out by some pundits this week.
Another Portuguese winger we’ve had on our books in recent years is Diego Moreira – and there’s a sense we may have cashed in on him too soon, given he’s now being linked with a move back to Stamford Bridge.
