Manchester United’s loanees and former stars continue to dominate headlines across Europe as the season edges into its decisive phase.
With financial pressures reshaping the transfer market and clubs reassessing long-term projects, performances away from Old Trafford are being watched more closely than ever.
United’s hierarchy are also keeping tabs on how former players are developing in new environments, particularly those rebuilding their careers abroad.
In France, the spotlight has been firmly fixed on one familiar name producing eye-catching numbers.
And over the past few days, the conversation around his future has taken a notable turn.
That is because Marseille president Pablo Longoria has now spoken at length about Mason Greenwood, offering comments that will not go unnoticed back in Manchester.
Mason Greenwood, who left Manchester United to restart his career in Ligue 1, has enjoyed a strong campaign with Marseille, contributing goals, assists and consistent attacking threat.
But Longoria made it clear that his satisfaction with the forward goes far beyond raw statistics.
“I’m proud of the performances, I’m proud of the personal development he’s having which is important,” said the Spaniard, via The Telegraph.
“I’m very proud of Mason, not when he’s scoring, but when he’s doing a defensive effort which is helping a lot the team.
“This is the moment when I’m fully satisfied with Mason because I think he’s improving in that, he’s one of the best players in the world.”
Those words underline how Greenwood’s evolution as an all-round player has impressed Marseille’s leadership, with his work rate and maturity now matching his obvious talent.
For Manchester United, it is further evidence that the 24-year-old has continued to grow away from the Premier League spotlight.
It was reported that Getafe were entitled to 25% of the transfer fee when Mason Greenwood joined Marseille, meaning they received just over £6.5 million from a deal worth around £26 million.
Longoria also addressed Greenwood’s future directly, hinting that nothing has been decided yet amid the complicated financial landscape of French football.
“We are happy. He’s performing and the numbers, the talent is there.
“At the same time, it’s also if we are on the same page, it’s also a moment to analyse, as well the financial situation and ecosystem of French football, knowing all the difficulties,” he explained.
However, the Marseille president stopped short of ruling anything out, suggesting Mason Greenwood could remain part of their long-term plans if all parties align.
“But I think if we are all aligned on Mason he can still have a future here.
“I think that it can be as well for him necessary because we are seeing that Mason this season is not the Mason of last season.
“I expect that he’s continuing to grow up and I would like to help him as well, you know, being better each day.”
From a Manchester United perspective, those remarks paint a clear picture: Greenwood’s value is rising again, both on and off the pitch.
