Manchester United’s summer midfield plans continue to be shaped by intense competition for some of Europe’s most wanted young talents.

The Red Devils have been monitoring several midfield options as they look to strengthen their squad.

West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes has been one of the names attracting the most attention after an impressive rise in the Premier League.

United are not the only club interested, with several European giants also exploring a potential move.

However, the latest development has shifted the race dramatically.

Tottenham Hotspur emerges as Mateus Fernandes preferred destination

According to AS, Mateus Fernandes has reportedly decided that Tottenham Hotspur is his preferred destination this summer, despite interest from European giants including Real Madrid and Manchester United.

The 21-year-old has emerged as a priority target for several clubs after standing out during a difficult season for West Ham following their relegation.

Fernandes only arrived at the London Stadium from Southampton last summer, but his performances quickly elevated his reputation, with 4 goals and 4 assists in 38 appearances.

His progress has attracted interest from across the continent, with Real Madrid making an approach to understand the midfielder’s situation.

According to AS, Madrid’s interest has not convinced Fernandes, with the Portuguese midfielder preferring a move to Tottenham instead of a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The decision is believed to be influenced by the opportunity to develop under Roberto De Zerbi, who wants to rebuild Spurs’ midfield options.

Jose Mourinho was reportedly keen on bringing Fernandes to Madrid, but Los Blancos have now turned their attention elsewhere and are exploring a move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez instead.

Tottenham are pushing to secure the deal and are prepared to offer around £70 million to West Ham in order to complete the signing.

Manchester United had been heavily involved in the race for Fernandes, with reports suggesting the club had already agreed personal terms with the player.

However, Spurs’ current position has complicated the situation as they attempt to convince West Ham and the midfielder to choose north London.

Liverpool have also entered discussions by making contact with West Ham to understand the conditions required for a possible deal.

For United, missing out on Fernandes would represent another challenge in a competitive midfield market, especially with several Premier League rivals now pursuing the same targets.
