Jarrad Branthwaite has become one of the most talked-about names in connection with INEOS’ project at Old Trafford. The English centre-back seemed set to leave Goodison Park after months of rumours linking him with United, but Everton put the brakes on.
The club did not budge on their financial demands, and Branthwaite ended up renewing his contract, sending a clear message: they will not let young talent slip away at the first offer. Even so, United’s gaze remains firmly fixed on him. His case is a good reflection of how the new management wants to act sensibly and without haste.
According to United in Focus, Graeme Bailey explained that interest in the 23-year-old remains alive, even if he does not fit into the immediate plans for reinforcements. Bailey stressed that the next 12 to 18 months could change everything. Players such asLuke Shaw and Lisandro Martínez have their futures up in the air, which opens the door for Branthwaite to be back on the Red Devils’ radar. The club believe that his growth deserves close monitoring. This pause does not mean the Englishman has been forgotten. United could make a move as soon as they need to renew their defensive core, and the Everton defender fits perfectly into that picture.
“Manchester United still like Jarrad Branthwaite, let’s get that right – but is a central defender key for them this summer, and a left-sider, I don’t believe so. I think it will be in the next 12-18 months, as I think the likes of Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez’s futures will come into question. Branthwaite has been rewarded for his fine form, and United will keep a close eye on his progress. When the time comes for them to upgrade at centre-half, clearly Branthwaite will be in their thinking.”
Now, will they manage to sign him when they make the move again? It is possible, but not easy. Everton know what they have and will not lower the price, especially if Branthwaite continues to perform well. The player has qualities that are lacking in United’s defence, and that are his height, clean ball distribution and calmness even at this age. Under Ruben Amorim’s guidance, Branthwaite would fit in as a left-sided centre-back in a back three, offering aerial solidity and aggression in duels.
Amorim prioritises defenders who are capable of pushing forward and threading passes. Therefore, Branthwaite could alternate between the role of third centre-back or partner for Martínez if he stays, although that remains to be seen. For the INEOS project, a defender with potential, a dominant physique, and a cool mentality is pure gold. If United manage to sign him when the defence need refreshing, they will have taken a logical step. It remains to be seen whether his name will end up at Old Trafford, but if this case proves anything, it is that the club are beginning to understand when to insist and when to wait. Branthwaite, meanwhile, will continue to refine his game, knowing that the doors remain ajar.
