Myles Lewis-Skelly is once again attracting serious attention from Manchester United as Michael Carrick’s squad rebuild continues to take shape.
The 19-year-old is one of Arsenal’s brightest academy graduates and has already established himself as an England international despite his age.
Lewis-Skelly is particularly interesting because of his versatility.
Although naturally a central midfielder, he is also capable of operating at left-back and has regularly featured there for both Arsenal and England.
That profile could appeal to United, especially given how their transfer window is developing.
David Ornstein reported on Wednesday that Manchester United are closing in on Carlos Baleba, who is expected to become the club’s third midfield addition of the summer after Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
If that deal is completed, many supporters expect United’s attention to turn towards strengthening at left-back before the window closes.
Lewis-Skelly therefore represents an intriguing option given his ability to cover both positions.
United were already offered the opportunity to sign Lewis-Skelly earlier this month, with Chelsea also approached over a potential move.
Now, United’s interest appears to have moved up another level.
According to football.london, Manchester United’s interest in Lewis-Skelly has intensified over the last week.
The report states that United’s pursuit of Lewis Hall has not progressed, while Lewis-Skelly’s performances during the summer have increased his appeal to those at Old Trafford.
However, there remains a significant obstacle.
Lewis-Skelly is understood to want to stay at Arsenal and is currently focused on his football rather than actively exploring an exit.
Mikel Arteta has also refused to provide definitive guarantees over the youngster’s future when questioned publicly.
Lewis-Skelly recently said he feels “ready” for the new campaign and praised the quality within Arsenal’s squad.
The England international made 36 appearances across all competitions last season and also started the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.
With United increasingly likely to complete their midfield rebuild through Baleba, Lewis-Skelly’s ability to strengthen both midfield and left-back could make him an increasingly attractive late-window option.
