Beppe Bergomi urged Inter Milan to strengthen their squad after Saturday’s 3-1 Serie A defeat at the hands of Napoli.
Speaking to Sky Sport via FCInter1908, Bergomi offered his assessment of Inter’s dismal loss at the Maradona Stadium.
Inter Milan headed into proceedings in high spirits, having won seven competitive matches in a row before Saturday’s clash.
However, referee Maurizio Mariani made a huge mistake midway through the first half, awarding a ‘soft’ penalty to Napoli.
Unfortunately, Cristian Chivu’s side failed to recover from that setback as Napoli ended a four-game winless league streak against the San Siro giants.
It would be unfair to put all the blame on the 43-year-old official.
Indeed, the Nerazzurri performed below expectations, especially after reducing Napoli’s lead through Hakan Calhanoglu.
Instead of shifting momentum in their favor, Inter lacked creativity and determination in the final third.
Furthermore, they left gaps at the back, allowing the Partenopei to score a ‘game-killing’ third goal through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.
Reluctant to comment on Mariani’s mistakes, Bergomi focused on Inter’s performance.
“It’s unpleasant to say, but Inter needs a fast defender, a physical midfielder, and a one-on-one striker,” Bergomi claimed.
“Yesterday, all these weaknesses came to light,” he was adamant.
Although his verdict was brutal, it was not far from the truth.
Inter lost Henrikh Mkhitaryan to injury in the first half, with Piotr Zielinski taking his place in the middle of the park.
However, the struggling Polish star looked disjointed, failing to make an impact against his former club.
Moreover, it felt like Inter lacked strength and energy despite Nicolo Barella’s signature runs, leaving them toothless in attack.
Elsewhere, Ange-Yoan Bonny and Lautaro Martinez were nearly anonymous in the final third, often finding themselves cut off from the rest of the team.
