For Manchester United, the search for a defensive midfielder has always been a top priority. In modern football, this role is not just an added layer of protection but the foundation of the entire system. A strong defensive midfielder shields the backline, disrupts opposition attacks, and quickly recycles possession, giving the team greater control of the game. This allows attacking players more freedom, as they can focus on creativity without worrying about defensive lapses.
Clubs lacking a solid option in this position often appear vulnerable against stronger opponents, which is why a reliable defensive midfielder is almost as valuable as a prolific goal scorer. With Casemiro aging and his pace declining, United are once again in search of quality reinforcements in this crucial role.
TBR Football’s Chief Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, recently reported that Newcastle United have maintained a long-standing interest in Marc Casado. During their search for midfield reinforcements in the summer, the Magpies explored options such as Atalanta’s Ederson and Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher, with Casado’s name also coming into the discussion.
Eddie Howe’s side have since made inquiries about the young midfielder as they look to further strengthen their squad. According to Bailey, Manchester United, West Ham, Atletico Madrid, and Marseille were also linked with Casado during the summer window. However, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was determined to keep him at the Nou Camp at all costs.
“The likes of Atalanta’s Ederson and Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher were on Newcastle’s radar as they considered bringing in another central midfielder. Casado emerged as a possible option for Eddie Howe, and enquiries were made.
“Clubs like Man United, West Ham, Atletico Madrid and Marseille were linked in the summer, but Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was keen to keep the 21-year-old international at the Nou Camp.”
That makes the situation even more intriguing. Fabrizio Romano recently reiterated that Manchester United made no late move for Angelo Stiller, underlining the club’s determination to find the right fit in defensive midfield. Reports have also suggested that United are monitoring the progress of Zeno Debast, indicating that the club is exploring a range of options with the future in mind.
Casado’s current contract with Barcelona runs until 2028, and media reports claim it includes a release clause of around €100 million. Meanwhile, TEAMtalk have reported that Atletico Madrid could be prepared to offer up to €45 million. All of this suggests that securing Casado will be far from straightforward for United, with several factors likely to determine which club he ultimately joins.
The real question now is how Ruben Amorim would use the Spaniard if he were to arrive at Old Trafford. Amorim’s system is built around a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 formation, where the double pivot plays a pivotal role. In this setup, one midfielder must hold a defensive position while the other pushes forward to carry the ball and spark creativity. Casado’s greatest strengths lie in his ability to read the game and break up opposition attacks. The 21-year-old is also composed on the ball and boasts an excellent passing range, qualities that could make him the heartbeat of United’s midfield under Amorim.
At United, he could form a promising partnership with Kobbie Mainoo, who provides the progressive element. Together, the pairing could offer balance: Casado anchoring the defensive side while Mainoo drives the team forward. His most valuable contribution would likely be covering the flanks when wing-backs push high and initiating quick transitions through his passing. While some concerns have been raised about his physicality in the Premier League’s fast, high-intensity environment, his tactical awareness and relentless work rate could go a long way in compensating for that.
However, United must be mindful that clubs such as Newcastle and Atletico Madrid are also firmly in the race. Ultimately, Casado’s decision will hinge on playing time, financial terms, and the manager’s vision for him. If Amorim can convince him of a central role at Old Trafford, United fans may finally see the midfield stability the club has been craving for years.
