The Magpies are in a new era with Matthias Jaissle, while Leverkusen are seeking to get going for the new Bundesliga season. The Newcastle United clash with Bayer Leverkusen will be one of the last pre-season matches before the 2026-27 season kicks off at St. James' Park on Saturday, August 15.
Newcastle have had an inconsistent pre-season, and Leverkusen have won five consecutive friendlies before dropping their last game. The two clubs last played competitively against each other in the Champions League in December 2025, when they drew 2-2.
Newcastle have won against Tottenham and Everton in their pre-season games, but lost to Valencia and Feyenoord. Jaissle will use the Leverkusen game to make some changes to hi strategy before the Premier League season begins.
Leverkusen have been very active in the preseason and have already played a few English teams. The German outfit has just played Nottingham Forest and will now complete its preparations at St. James' Park.
Both managers will be expected to allocate plenty of minutes to their first team players as the competitive season gets underway and will be looking to continue to test their preferred combinations.
Newcastle are expected to use a 4-2-3-1 formation:
Newcastle United predicted lineup: Hornicek; Shahar, Thiaw, Botman, Charlton; Bamba, Joelinton; Elanga, Wissa, Toure; Osula.
Bayer Leverkusen are also expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1:
