Brazil legend Zico has delivered a blunt assessment of Neymar Jr., praising his talent while pointing out what he believes separates him from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The comparison places Neymar alongside two of the greatest players in football history, but with one key distinction.
And according to Zico, it has nothing to do with ability.
Zico shared his view while discussing Neymar’s place among football’s elite.
“I’m a fan, God gave him a talent that he gave to few. In this world I’m talking about, it’s Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. They are the three.
“But the other two are tremendous professionals. He was not being one,” Zico said.
The statement highlights a contrast between natural ability and professional consistency.
It also reinforces how Neymar is still seen as part of the elite tier, even within criticism.
Zico expanded on that idea by pointing to how Neymar’s career has unfolded in recent years.
“Football gave him everything and that’s the problem. But talent, he has more than everyone else. For a while now, he hasn’t known how to make the most of it,” Zico added.
The argument shifts from comparison to reflection, focusing on what could have been rather than what was achieved.
It also underlines a recurring theme in Neymar’s career, where expectations have often exceeded outcomes.
Zico’s take does not question Neymar’s place among the greats, it questions how far he could have gone.
