Official: Lazio Rescind Veteran Defender’s Contract

Lazio have officially terminated the contract of Samuel Gigot, who hasn’t featured in a competitive game for more than a year.

The 32-year-old sealed a deadline-day move to Lazio exactly two years ago. He initially joined the club on loan from Olympique Marseille, but the Biancocelesti had purchased him last summer due to an obligation-to-buy clause. In his first season in the Italian capital, the Frenchman wasn’t a first choice in Marco Baroni’s team, but he still went on to make 23 appearances.

On the contrary, Gigot was nowhere to be seen last summer, as he struggled with back and knee problems that prevented him from making a single appearance under Maurizio Sarri. After his appointment, Gennaro Gattuso was hoping to rely on his old OM pupil, but he soon came to realise that the defender is still dealing with serious physical issues.

Following Sunday’s win over Genoa, the Lazio head coach offered positive updates on other injured players, before describing Gigot’s status as ‘out of action’.

Despite being busy conducting deadline-day deals, Lazio officials still found time to rescind Gigot’s contract on Tuesday. The club announced the termination via an official statement

The Frenchman only had one year left on his contract, but his departure will allow the Biancocelesti to save €4 million in gross salary.

With Gigot gone, Gattuso still has five central defenders at his disposal in the shape of Oliver Provstgaard, Danilho Deokhi, Josip Sutalo, Patric, and Alessio Romagnoli, although the latter’s future remains uncertain, with Al-Sadd still pushing to sign him before the Qatari transfer deadline on Thursday.
