Defender Kevin Danso completes permanent move to Tottenham Hotspur from French club RC Lens

Tottenham Hotspur have begun their squad rebuild after their worst-ever Premier League campaign.

Spurs finished just a spot above three relegated clubs, witnessing a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion at home on the final day of the season. But barely did any fan cared as they were so much into celebratory mood over the UEFA Europa League triumph.

The Europa League success gave Ange Postecoglou’s side a trophy and entry into next season’s Champions League, but it won’t cover the problems they regularly faced in the Premier League. Reinforcements are an absolute must if the Lilywhites are to challenge at the top end of the table, and a central defender has to be among their top priorities.

Before the summer transfer window kicks off, Tottenham have officially confirmed the permanent signing of Kevin Danso from RC Lens.

The 26-year-old joined the North Londoners on loan from RC Lens during the winter transfer window as cover for the injured first-choice centre-back duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. The deal included a €25 million obligation clause, and he will now complete a permanent move as confirmed by the club’s official website.

Kevin Danso made 10 Premier League appearances last season and came on as a late substitute as Spurs defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in Bilbao. The Austrian international did well to provide cover for not only Romero and Van de Ven, but also replace the injured Radu Dragusin in the squad.

Dragusin suffered an ACL injury in early February and was ruled out for the rest of the season. Ange Postecoglou was short in numbers at the back, so Danso’s timely acquisition helped the team a lot and he delivered some fantastic performances. The ex-Southampton man most notably produced a rock-solid display in the 1-0 home win over Man United in the league, with James Maddison’s strike being the difference.

Like majority of the Tottenham players, Danso also had to spend time on the treatment table. The Australian was sidelined with a hamstring injury for over a month, missing six games in the process. He returned from injury during the business end of the season and did his bit to help Ange’s team get over the line in the Europa League final against United.

After the permanent capture of Danso, Daniel Levy and Co. are expected to spend big on a quality central defender. They are still unsure whether Romero will stay or leave the club, and if he decides to end his stay at N17, Tottenham may need two centre-backs to cover the 2025/26 season where we will also participate in the Champions League.
