Tammy Abraham now looks set to join his new club, Besiktas, as the third club since leaving Chelsea and Stamford Bridge. The English striker had a very strong first season abroad, netting 27 for Roma, though has severely struggled to replicate this form in seasons gone by, partly due to unfortunate injuries.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that there has been a “verbal agreement” between Besiktas and Roma for Abraham to move to the Turkish Super Lig on a permanent deal. The striker is set to fly to Turkey, and will look to use this transfer to “revive [his] career” after a difficult few years. Reports of varying reliability had previously discussed this as a loan with option to buy, but it appears that I Giallorossi want to get the man who “peaked early” off their books quickly.
Romano has given his Here We Go with Abraham set to fly to Turkey as he has accepted the destination. Whether he was tempted by the move due to this year’s appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjær is unclear, though it could well have been a factor. Paperwork is now being completed between the clubs for the reported approximately £17 million fee.
When Abraham was sold by the Blues to Roma, they had just signed Romelu Lukaku, suggesting that their academy product would struggle to get minutes. However, ever since, they have not had a striker that has filled fans with confidence week-in, week-out. Lukaku netted just eight in the league before leaving, which was followed by Kai Havertz leading the line and managing just seven. Cole Palmer has been a more than adequate goal threat, though this has not come from a centre-forward role.
In the last couple of years, Nicholas Jackson has been the striker, though not to great effect. After years of mediocracy, they have forked out £30 million for Liam Delap; if they had wanted a physical, homegrown finisher, they already had one at their disposal. Had they given their academy product more time, they may already have a perfect striker. Now, they have to hope that Delap can fulfil his potential.
