Antonin Panenka, who has his name linked with one of the most well-known penalty techniques in world football, has been hospitalized and placed in intensive care after contracting COVID-19, as Reuters (h/t ESPN) explained.
Bohemians 1905, Panenka's former club, confirmed the news on Wednesday:

The 71-year-old famously used the shot that shares his name to guide Czechoslovakia past West Germany in the 1976 UEFA European Championship Final.
A "Panenka" assumes an opposing goalkeeper will guess and dive either right or left as the approaching player makes contact with the ball on the penalty spot. Instead, however, the striker of the ball merely chips it straight down the middle for what is a relatively easy goal unless the goalkeeper remains still.
Italian legend Andrea Pirlo used the Panenka at Euro 2012.
Flamboyant forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored Panenkas in Europe and Major League Soccer:
The player in question does, however, appear rather foolish and is often taunted by an opposing goalkeeper if a Panenka goes poorly:
Panenka earned Czechoslovak Footballer of the Year honors for 1980 after his country finished third at that year's Euro.
"If it were patentable, I'd have patented it," he once joked about his spot kick, according to the official UEFA website.
