Ruben Amorim continues to feel the pressure at Manchester United

The mood around Manchester United feels uneasy again. The club tried to reset under Ruben Amorim, but things have not settled yet. The board appointed him last November to bring structure, discipline, and a clear tactical identity to the side. Yet, almost a year later, his results have not matched expectations, and the optimism that surrounded his arrival from Sporting CP has turned into uncertainty.

The team have lost too many matches. The football, though occasionally promising, still lacks the quality needed to produce consistent results. United supporters keep showing patience, but remain restless amid the team’s poor performances. Many now question whether Amorim can handle Premier League football.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke said on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast that Amorim continues to face growing pressure. He mentioned that while the club plan to give the Portuguese coach more time to apply his ideas, their patience is running thin. O’Rourke explained that football demands results, and without wins, faith in any manager will disappear very quickly.

Last season’s fifteenth-place finish already tested the board’s resolve. If the same problems continue this season, Sir Jim Ratcliffe may finally change his stance. He publicly promised Amorim three years to prove himself, but he may withdraw that support sooner. The message is simple: Amorim must show progress, or the club will replace him.

“Look, it’s a results-driven business. And if you’re not getting results, it obviously piles pressure on Amorim. If results don’t improve, performances don’t improve, and Man United find themselves well down in the table, it’s going to increase pressure on them and they might be forced into making a change.”

“It’s a huge public backing and support that Ratcliffe has given to Amorim, saying he wants to give him three years to prove himself at Man United. We know Ratcliffe has said that he wants to give him three years to get things right, prove himself. If the results don’t improve in the meantime, the pressure will just grow and grow, and once that happens, you normally do have a change of managers.”

In the background, rumours continue to swirl about possible successors. Spanish legend Xavi wants the Manchester United job as pressure mounts on the current boss, Ruben Amorim. Meanwhile, another Spaniard with Premier League experience, Unai Emery, has been linked with the club. These reports have increased the tension at Carrington. Each result will now decide the manager’s immediate future.

Will Amorim survive?

People inside and outside the club argue both for and against keeping faith in Amorim. His supporters highlight his achievements at Sporting CP. The forty-year-old ended a nineteen-year title drought there and won another league crown in 2023–24. They believe his success deserves time.

The Portuguese manager uses a 3–4–3 system that needs high pressing and structured possession, which could finally give United a clear playing identity after years of confusion. He values developing young players, which fits the club’s traditions. Amorim helped players like Gonçalo Inácio and Nuno Mendes grow into top professionals during his time at Sporting CP. With United’s strong academy, fans still hope that he could develop similar talent.

However, his critics call him too rigid. The same tactical setup that brought success in Portugal now limits the United squad in England. The club built this squad for a different style, and the players struggle under his approach. Despite heavy summer spending, the team continue to fight in the lower half of the table. Many doubt his ability to adjust. Some argue his vision, though ambitious, does not fit this group of players or the fast pace of English football.

Amorim believes in his ideas, but belief alone cannot win matches. The next few months will show whether he can turn effort into results. If he does, Ratcliffe’s patience will look justified. If he fails, Manchester United will likely replace him, and this time, the cost of another failure will feel even heavier.
