Tottenham Hotspur are looking to build on last season’s Europa League success and have started the new campaign very well under Thomas Frank. They beat Leeds United 2-1 at Elland Road last weekend to climb up to third in the table, just two points below league leaders Arsenal.
Thomas Frank has certainly improved the squad in many ways, bringing togetherness and fighting spirit within the group as they look to compete on all fronts this season. But, the Dane knows the team is far from the finished article and there are several holes that requires plugging. He is still trying to find a solution for the left-wing position after failing to land a winger during the summer transfer window.
None of Wilson Odobert, Brennan Johnson or Mathys Tel have done enough to cement their spot on the left flank, while Frank has tried summer signing Xavi Simons in that position in a few games but got barely anything in return.
Tottenham pulled out all stops to sign Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo to solve their left-wing conundrum after they realised Son Heung-min will leave the club. However, regardless of Son’s departure to the MLS in mid-August, they failed to land Antoine Semenyo.
The Ghanaian international enjoyed a hugely productive 2024/25 campaign at the Vitality Stadium, bagging 20 goal contributions in 42 appearances. As per Premier League great Alan Shearer, the 25-year-old has taken his game to the next level this season, with Semenyo registering six goals and three assists in seven Premier League appearances thus far. It would not be wrong to say he is currently the most in-form player along with Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland.
Semenyo’s form has put several Premier League bigwigs on red alert. Tottenham and Manchester United and Tottenham are among the teams plotting a move for the dynamic winger in 2026, despite him having put pen to paper on a new deal in the summer. This piece of information comes from former Spurs and Manchester United senior scout Mick Brown.
“It comes as no surprise that there is interest in Semenyo,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
“He’s been excellent since the start of last season really, and has performed above the level I thought he was capable of when I first saw him play which I’m happy to say.
“He’s so instrumental in what Bournemouth do, he scores goals, gives them power and running ability, and he does so well technically and creatively as well. As a result of that, he’s maintained his form even when other big players have left the club.
“Semenyo would be an asset in anybody’s team, and that’s why I’m told Tottenham and Man United have both been looking at bringing him in.”
Mick Brown feels Spurs are strong contenders for the Bournemouth star’s signature next year. This is because Man United invested heavily in forwards such as Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo during the summer transfer window.
“The issue with United is, where would he play? If it’s on the right, they’ve got Mbeumo there, and if it’s on the left they’ve got Cunha, so is there space for him?” he added.
“For Tottenham, though, he’s the type of player who could make a real difference for them.
“Bournemouth will be preparing for that interest, because of the players they lost in the summer and the interest in him, and they won’t want to see him go. He signed a new contract so it won’t be easy or cheap to get him out, but I don’t think that’s put clubs off, they will feel they can tempt him away.”
Bournemouth lost the likes of Ilya Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez and Dango Ouattara in the summer. They managed to keep hold of Semenyo and convince him to sign a new contract, which the attacker did. This apparently put cold water on rumours around a potential imminent exit.
However, there is a growing feeling Semenyo could be lured away from the Vitality Stadium in 2026, although a summer move is more likely than a January departure. And in a strategic move to stave off potential suitors, the Cherries have slapped an £80million price tag on the Ghana star.
This leaves the ball on Tottenham’s court; whether they test Bournemouth’s resolve in the winter window or wait until the summer to sign Semenyo. If they delay their pursuit until the summer, there is a strong possibility for the Lilywhites facing competition from rivals for the winger’s signature.
