FIFA got a dream matchup in the round of 16 at the 2025 Club World Cup, with Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF squaring off with Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta for a spot in the quarterfinal.

PSG was Messi's last club before leaving Europe to join Major League Soccer in July 2023. Since his departure, PSG also got rid of stars such as Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, and the new-look team won the 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League under manager Luis Enrique.

The PSG coach brings another piece of history to the match against Inter Miami, as he was the manager of FC Barcelona from 2014-2017.

A decade ago, he led a team that included current Inter Miami players Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba (plus current IMCF manager Javier Mascherano) to a historic treble by claiming La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey in the 2014-2015 season.

Of course, journalists were sure to ask Enrique his thoughts on the reunion. The PSG boss was open about the fact that it would not just be another game.

“It is a very different match and it is very special for me to see these players again, because they are more than players to me," Enrique said

"It will be special before and after the match, for sure, but we are professionals and we know what we are playing for," he added. "It’s important to stay focused ... of course it will be different on an emotional level.”

The match kicks off at noon ET on Sunday from Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Along with a place in the quarterfinal, the winner of the Inter Miami-PSG match will earn $13,125,000 in prize money from FIFA for advancing to the final eight.

Both clubs already banked massive participation fees plus $7.5 million for advancing to the knockout stage. The prize money for the final alone is $40 million, taking the champion's payout well over $100 million for the reformatted tournament.

Amid the commercialized football frenzy, it is still the personal narratives that sell Inter Miami vs. PSG as Luis Enrique plots a plan to knock Messi and friends out of the competition.
