Real Madrid's Toni Kroos tests positive for COVID-19, out for season finale

Spanish giants Real Madrid will be without a key midfielder when they face Villarreal in Saturday's must-win La Liga season finale.

Los Blancos confirmed Monday that Toni Kroos has tested positive for the coronavirus and won't be available through this weekend's fixtures. "Real Madrid C. F. announces that our player, Toni Kroos, tested positive in the COVID-19 test he underwent today," the club said in a brief statement.

"Kroos has been in isolation since Friday 14 May after having come into direct contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19."

It's a brutal blow for Real manager Zinedine Zidane as he attempts to guide the team to the top of the table on the final matchday of the campaign. Real trail leaders Atletico Madrid by two points heading into Saturday's action but, per Roger Gonzalez of CBS Sports, hold the tiebreaker advantage over Atleti if they finish level on points.

Atleti are away to relegation candidates Real Valladolid (19th) on Saturday, while Real Madrid will host seventh-placed Villarreal at the same time.
