Peter Crouch backs Tottenham Hotspur star Archie Gray to gun for glory under Thomas Frank

Tottenham Hotspur youngster Archie Gray has been rather unfortunate not to feature regularly under Thomas Frank this season. The England U-21 international played far more games than expected last term as the Lilywhites defied all odds to lift the Europa League title. However, much of that opportunity came as a result of the injury crisis that struck the North London side midway through the campaign.

During that spell, Ange Postecoglou often deployed Gray as a centre-back — a position unfamiliar to the teenager. Yet, the 19-year-old adapted remarkably well, producing a string of impressive performances that instantly made him a fan favourite at N17. Naturally, Spurs supporters were eager to see him build on that momentum this season, especially under Thomas Frank — a coach renowned for nurturing young talent.

However, things haven’t quite gone according to plan. According to Sofascore, Gray has made just five appearances in all competitions so far, accumulating a total of 189 minutes of game time. Despite the limited opportunities, the youngster has made the most of his chances — particularly standing out in Spurs’ Carabao Cup clash against Doncaster Rovers, where he put in a superb all-round display.

Tottenham must bring out the best in Archie Gray this season

Gray’s performance in that match showed exactly why he could be the long-term solution for the No. 8 role under Frank. Operating primarily down the right channel, he made intelligent runs from deep, linked up effectively with the wide players, and showcased excellent composure in controlling the tempo and creating chances from midfield.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, With Peter Crouch backing the youngster to become a vital player for the club this season. Speaking on TNT Sports (via TBR Football), Crouch said,

“I think his attitude last year was first class, there were some difficult moments – the young lads really stepped up to the plate, I thought Bergvall was similar. He’s got all the attributes to be a very successful player in this division. It’s nice to see him in those kinds of situations, too much last year he was playing as a centre half for the majority of games and he coped with it really well.”

The ex-Spurs striker added,

“Especially with all the injuries around him, he stayed fit, he stayed focused, he didn’t let his head drop, he continued to want the ball, and I think now we’ll see the progression of him moving further forward and becoming the player we all know he can be.”

The former Tottenham forward believes Gray exceeded expectations in his debut season, showing maturity and composure well beyond his years — even when forced to play out of position. Crouch is confident that, once given a consistent run in his natural midfield role, the 19-year-old can become an integral part of Thomas Frank’s side.

It remains to be seen how Frank opts to utilise Archie Gray this season. The ex-Leeds United starlet needs regular game time this season so that he can continue his development and become a better player. So, the onus is now on the Danish tactician to bring out the best in him and offer him consistent minutes in the Premier League.
