Thomas Frank agreed to leave Brentford for Tottenham Hotspur after seven years, with the North Londoners activating the 51-year-old’s £10 million release clause.
The new Spurs boss will be looking to improve the squad sufficiently after last season’s abysmal Premier League position. Now with Champions League football also added, Daniel Levy and Johan Lange must help the Dane build a squad that can compete in multiple fronts.
Naturally, several Brentford players have been linked with a move to White Hart Lane in the last couple of weeks since Thomas Frank became favourite to succeed Ange Postecoglou. Mikkel Damsgaard has emerged as a target for Spurs after becoming the assist-king for the Bees last season. Spurs have also shown an interest in Yegor Yarmolyuk, who enjoyed his breakout campaign at the Gtech Community Stadium this past term.
Another Brentford star now firmly on the radar of the North Londoners is Bryan Mbeumo. The 25-year-old enjoyed the best season of his career with 20 goals and seven assists in 38 Premier League outings. He was consistently productive, tormenting defences with his pace, power, physicality, dribbling and ruthless finishing.
The Cameroonian international has been in talks with Manchester United over a summer move, with a move to Old Trafford being his preferred option. He snubbed interest from Champions League competitors Newcastle United and Arsenal, but Ruben Amorim’s side have struggled to agree on a deal yet.
This has given Tottenham a window of opportunity to hijack Man United’s move for Bryan Mbeumo, and Frank’s arrival at N17 could throw a spanner in the works. While Man United remain favourites for the left-footed attacker’s signature, TBR Football senior correspondent Graeme Bailey says Spurs still have a chance and their ability to offer him the chance of staying in London could make a difference.
“We need to keep an eye on the Mbeumo situation. It is a thing,” Graeme Bailey exclusively mentioned on TBR Football report.
“Manchester United are very confident the player is theirs and the player has made it clear he is ready to join United, but we need to keep an eye on that one – I am told that if the player is offered the chance to stay in London, it could play a part.
“As said, United are still firm favourites, but Tottenham do like the player – they did before Thomas Frank arrived, so for them to come in for him would not be a huge shock. Indeed, within football, there is an expectation that they will.
“The question is now if United can get this done and dusted. Spurs think there is a need for another player on the right.”
Mbeumo has been brilliant over the last two seasons, consistently making things happen. Frank knows the Cameroonian ace extremely well, having overseen his development at Brentford since bringing him to England from French club Troyes in 2019.
The Brentford man had been in talks with United over a summer move, but the lure of Champions League football and his former boss Frank may change his decision to join Spurs instead. Tottenham fans can only hope.
