In recent weeks, it feels like every time the fans turn around, there is another game between FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. The teams faced each other in the Copa del Rey and La Liga, and are set to play against each other in the upcoming Champions League fixtures. The results varied between the matches, promising a game in which anything could happen.

Shot For Shot

Having watched Real Madrid lose against Mallorca, Barcelona’s players knew that a chance to increase their La Liga lead was at their fingertips. Those in Atlético’s colors, on the other hand, wanted to rebuild their confidence after the recent defeat against the Catalan giants. Thus, both teams put their best foot forward. Action moved from one half to the other, with players on both sides noting promising chances that lacked a clean finish.

A notable example was the effort of Antoine Griezmann. Around 10 minutes after the first whistle, the Frenchman tore through Blaguarana’s defence, almost as if they were amateurs, not paid professionals. Unfortunately for the home fans, his final shot lacked the needed precision and fell right into the hands of Joan García. From Barcelona’s side, a play to watch happened towards the end of the first half. A few clean passes let them get the ball to the well-positioned Lamine Yamal, who tried to put his team in the lead. Although it was heading in the right direction, it ended up hitting the bar rather than going into the net.

The score only changed in the 39th minute. Barcelona tried to catch Giuliano Simeone offside, but he evaded their trap and ran too quickly for the defenders to catch up. Having found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, he made sure not to waste the opportunity. Blaugrana’s answer was almost immediate. Not even five minutes after the goal, Marcus Rashford expertly manoeuvred through the field and, with the help of Dani Olmo, levelled the playing field.

A Heated End To The First Half

With only a few minutes left in the first half, the tensions on the field drastically increased. Contact between Olmo and Simeone led to a heated exchange between the players from both teams. It culminated with three yellow cards, one for Fermín López, one for Nahuel Molina, and one for Koke.

After the game was resumed, Barcelona saw an opportunity to go into the break with an upper hand. Yamal sprinted towards Atlético’s goal, but was illegally stopped right next to the penalty box by Nico González. The latter had already been awarded a yellow earlier in the game for touching the ball with his hands, so a second added to his account meant an early end of his evening. Or rather, it would have, had the situation not been checked by VAR. Upon watching a replay, the referee changed the yellow into a direct red, sealing Atlético’s fate and forcing them to play the second half at a decided disadvantage.

Martín’s Close Call

It seemed like the universe was determined to see a balanced game between the two great teams, as not even a minute after the players returned to the field, Barcelona was threatened with a red of their own. Gerard Martín stepped on the ankle of one of Atlético’s players, but did so after touching the ball. This was seen as enough of a mitigating circumstance for the card to be withdrawn, and Martín got off with a well-deserved yellow.

Although the situation didn’t lead to a change in the number of players, it did anger the madrileños. Yellow cards were shown to multiple team members before the game was resumed. The referee got to hide its physical signifier as the players returned to the match, but it didn’t take long for it to make a grand return. It was shown to Clement Langlet after his foul on Yamal.

The Accidental Polish Hero

Yamal was quite a proactive player in the match, creating multiple actions and never straying too far from Atlético’s penalty box. Despite his involvement, he always fell just short of converting the promising situations into goals. The same couldn’t be said about Robert Lewandowski, who joined the field late in the game but ended up playing a crucial part in Barcelona’s victory.

Three minutes before the end of standard time, João Cancelo played with Atlético’s defence before trying to put the ball in Juan Musso’s net. It bounced off the goalkeeper and soared straight towards the Polish striker, landing on his shoulder and ricocheting into the net. Incidental or not, the touch put Barcelona in the lead that their opponents weren’t able to overturn. The game ended with a score of 1:2 for Blaugrana.

End Of My Barcelona Rant

Barcelona’s victory, paired with Real’s defeat, put them seven points ahead of La Liga’s current runners-up. It also gave them the much-needed confidence before their upcoming fixture: yet another game against Atlético, this time in the Champions League.
