Robert Sanchez status becoming more clear as Chelsea transfer plans develop

Chelsea are still struggling to decide what to do in goal after a good season for Robert Sanchez actually ended up confusing things more.

It’s the 1st day in June – time to check out how our number 1 is getting on.

Robert Sanchez is not just the number 1, he’s also the number one goalkeeper. And he wants to keep it that way. Reports last week claimed that the Spanish stopper wasn’t happy with the idea that he might have to compete for his starting place.

To be fair to him, he did have a better season this year, despite the chaos around him. But really we don’t think any player should be offended that they have to compete to be first choice. That’s just the nature of sport.

Sanchez likely to hold on to number one spot next season

While signing a top goalkeeper should still be a priority for Chelsea, we sense that’s probably not going to happen this summer. Sanchez will keep his first choice spot, with young Mike Penders likely recalled from loan to compete with him.

With no European football, however, it will be hard to find useful minutes for Penders to play, and we worry about how his development might be affected by a season sitting on the bench behind Sanchez.

Angelo Stiller has been suggested as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernandez – but he may have the same problem that the Argentine does.
