Manchester United’s start to the season has left more questions than answers after three disappointing results.

Following a promising pre-season, Ruben Amorim looked visibly stunned as he spoke about his team being outplayed by Grimsby Town.

Amorim looked defeated in a strange post-match interview, admitting that his players’ feelings were reflected in their performance.

There is no excuse for United losing to a fourth-division side, especially given the clear gap in quality. At the very least, they should have been able to put some passes together.

Mistakes from Andre Onana played a part, but the real concern was how easily Grimsby took control of the first half.

Even before the loss to Grimsby, Roy Keane had already criticised one United player, suggesting he wasn’t up to the standard required for Manchester United.

During the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, recorded before the Grimsby loss, United’s early-season struggles were a major talking point.

Gary Neville spoke at length about the midfield issues observed against Fulham, prompting Keane to interject and highlight Mount as a particular worry.

The Irish legend said: “You’ve mentioned three or four players there, are they Man United players? Is Mount a Man United player?”

Neville then cut in with his own take, “Mount I think he’s actually done well in his first two games Roy, but I don’t know where he fits if he’s keeping Sesko out of the team.”

Keane did not back down: “Do you think Mount is honestly gonna get back at United?”

Neville replied: “To be honest, Roy, I think he really likes Mount.”

“I think he does, and that worries me,” Keane responded.

The criticism holds weight. Amorim has been persistent in playing Mount, even when it appears to disrupt the balance of the side.

Manchester United face Burnley this weekend in what already feels like a pivotal match, even this early in the season.

Given how poor the start has been, anything less than a convincing win will only turn up the pressure even more. The noise is already loud, and another slip could make things really uncomfortable.

There are some concerns among fans that Amorim could walk away, especially after a few comments he has made that suggest he might be thinking about it.

If there was ever a time to shake things up, it is now. That starts with moving Mount to the bench. Sesko should come into the side, and the setup behind him needs to be spot on.

United cannot afford any more missteps. They need to show progress, and fast.
