Ruben Amorim may have banished several players from pre-season preparations, but he has not completely closed the door on their chances of returning to the Manchester United team.
Ruben Amorim is under real pressure to deliver results this season after a poor start to his time at Manchester United. The former Sporting CP boss replaced Erik ten Hag, but things only got worse from there as the Red Devils lost the Europa League final and finished 15th in the Premier League.
To prepare for the 2025/26 campaign, Amorim has taken his squad to the United States for a summer series featuring friendlies against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton.
The trip has also given reporters a chance to speak with Amorim, who appeared alongside new signing Matheus Cunha at a press conference in Chicago on Friday.
Amorim and Cunha discussed a range of topics during the session, with both UK-based and local US media in attendance.
One of the questions put to Amorim was about his new signings and how he plans to use Kobbie Mainoo in the upcoming season.
Several players still under contract at United weren’t included in the squad for pre-season training.
Marcus Rashford, who has since moved on loan to Barcelona, was among those left out.
Apart from Rashford, Amorim also omitted Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia from the pre-season tour squad.
Antony is back in Manchester after a holiday and a loan at Real Betis.

Malacia has drawn interest from Saudi Arabia, but it’s still unclear whether the other three will secure moves away or remain with United next season.
Amorim noted that he hasn’t ruled out bringing them back into the squad once the transfer window closes.
He explained: “Some players have to find a new place to have more space in the team, and other players clearly show they want a new challenge and want new teams. We are just allowing these players to have time to think and to decide. If we reach a point where they have to join the team, they will join the team because they are our players.”
“I know for a fact, these people, Omar [Berrada], Jason [Wilcox], and the club, have a number for these players. If they don’t reach that number, they will be Manchester United players. No doubt about that. I understand that clubs are waiting for the last minute but they can have a surprise.”
“I’m ready to receive these players; it gives us more competition,” he continued. “If you want to play in the World Cup next year you need minutes on the pitch so I’m happy with this because it gives me more options.”
“If there is increased competition for places then I see no issues with this,” added Amorim. “If you look at all of Europe’s top clubs there is always strength in depth throughout their squads.”
If Ineos can bring in funds through player sales, it would give them more flexibility to target problem areas within the squad. Striker and goalkeeper remain two of the most pressing issues still to be addressed.
According to ESPN, United have narrowed their striker search to a three-man list that no longer includes Benjamin Sesko.
The focus has now shifted to Ollie Watkins, Randal Kolo Muani, and Dusan Vlahovic. However, the report notes that any move will depend on players leaving first. Until then, no deal is likely to happen soon.
