Saint-Etienne officially sign Manchester United trialist

Manchester United have placed increasing emphasis on recruiting young talent since INEOS became involved at Old Trafford.

That strategy continued during the summer, with United strengthening Michael Carrick’s first-team midfield through Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba.

However, recruitment further down the age groups has remained equally important.

Cristian Orozco, Kit Margetson, Tynan Thompson and David Eze were among the prospects brought into Carrington as United attempted to build for tomorrow alongside improving today.

France has also provided United with plenty of talent over the years.

Eric Cantona crossed the Channel before becoming an Old Trafford icon, while Patrice Evra arrived from Monaco and developed into one of the Premier League’s finest left-backs.

More recently, United have looked towards Ligue 1 for players including Leny Yoro, with French football continuing to produce some of Europe’s brightest prospects.

One youngster previously given an opportunity to impress at Carrington has now officially taken the next step in his career in France.

Former Manchester United trialist completes move

Saint-Etienne have officially announced the signing of Etienne Mendy, with the winger joining the French club from Senegalese academy Diambars FC.

The 18-year-old was previously handed a trial at Manchester United in September 2025.

Reports at the time claimed Mendy was given the opportunity to impress United after emerging through Diambars, but a permanent move to Old Trafford ultimately never materialised.

One year later, his European adventure has now begun elsewhere.

Saint-Etienne confirmed Mendy’s arrival on their official Instagram account, describing the Senegalese international as a “dazzling winger” who will strengthen their attacking options.

The French side also confirmed that Mendy has joined directly from Diambars FC.

Although United decided against completing a deal following his trial, the move provides Mendy with another significant platform to continue his development.

His progress in France could now make for interesting viewing at Carrington, particularly if a player once assessed by United begins to fulfil his potential elsewhere.
