Manchester United’s summer rebuild continues to take shape as the club makes decisions over which midfield targets fit their long-term plans.
The Red Devils have been linked with several options in the centre of the pitch.
However, not every reported target is expected to become a serious pursuit, with United already making moves in the market.
The latest development has seen one highly rated midfielder’s future move closer to a Premier League rival.
Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has become one of the names attracting major attention this summer.
According to the Daily Mail, Sandro Tonali’s preference is Arsenal despite Tottenham making an opening move for the Newcastle midfielder, with Manchester United now stepping away from the race.
The Italy international has attracted interest from several top clubs after an impressive spell at St James’ Park, with Spurs testing Newcastle’s resolve with a £75 million offer.
That proposal was rejected over the weekend, but Tottenham are expected to return with an improved bid as they look to complete their summer business early.
The north London side are believed to be pushing aggressively for Sandro Tonali, although the midfielder’s own preference could complicate their efforts.
Tonali is open to the idea of working with Roberto De Zerbi, but Arsenal are understood to be his preferred destination if they decide to accelerate their interest.
For Manchester United, the midfielder is no longer viewed as a realistic option this summer after the club informed Newcastle they will not be pursuing a deal.
The Red Devils reportedly believe the overall financial package, including the transfer fee and salary expectations, is too expensive to justify making a move.
Instead, United have already progressed with another midfield addition, having reached an agreement for Atalanta’s Ederson.
The Brazilian is expected to complete his permanent switch to Old Trafford in the coming weeks as United continue reshaping their squad.
While United have moved away from Sandro Tonali, interest in the midfielder remains strong across the Premier League.
Manchester City are also monitoring the situation and could consider adding the Newcastle star to their midfield options.
With Arsenal emerging as Tonali’s favoured destination and Tottenham pushing to secure an agreement, United’s decision to step aside could allow their rivals to battle it out for his signature.
