Sassuolo’s ‘physically strong’, ‘no nonsense pragmatist’ CB has caught Tottenham’s eye

Tarik Muharemović, the Bosnia & Herzegovina international, centre-back, has had a strong season at Sassuolo, establishing himself as one of the more promising young defenders in Serie A. Sassuolo are open to selling him this summer and have set a valuation around €30-35m+, and some reports even mention holding out for closer to €40m from Premier League clubs.

Tottenham has been repeatedly linked with a move in recent days/weeks. Reports from CaughtOffside and Italian outlets suggest Spurs are well-placed, have initiated contacts, and are among the frontrunners for a Premier League switch. Sassuolo’s CEO, Giovanni Carnevali, has reportedly been in London sounding out English interest.

Inter Milan were earlier in pole position, where personal terms were reportedly agreed in April, but recent updates suggest Tottenham have momentum and that Inter’s negotiations have slowed. Juventus retains a 50% sell-on clause from his previous move, as they sold him to Sassuolo for a low fee, so they’ll get a cut of any transfer and have been linked with a potential return.

Leverage and fit 

He’s a left-footed CB, physically strong, composed on the ball, and has shown good leadership qualities for his age. Contract runs until 2031, which gives Sassuolo leverage, but they’re realistic about cashing in on a key asset.

Tariq relies on positional discipline, anticipation, and concentration. Strong in blocks, interceptions, and ground duels; described as a “no-nonsense” pragmatist who clears danger efficiently. He’s comfortable in possession, especially left-footed on the left side. Can break lines with progressive passes when given space/time; effective in tight spaces and build-up. Pass accuracy around 83% in highlights.

This fits a pattern for Tottenham under their current setup — targeting young, high-upside defenders from Europe at reasonable fees rather than massive Premier League premiums. Whether it materialises will depend on how much Spurs are willing to pay (and their broader defensive needs this window).
