Scott McTominay’s overhead kick against Denmark has been turned into legal tender.
The Bank of Scotland has unveiled a limited edition £20 note featuring imagery inspired by the former Manchester United midfielder’s stunning strike that fired Scotland to their first World Cup in 28 years.
BBC News has reported that just 100 of the notes have been printed, with fifty to be released to the public through a combination of collector auctions, a prize draw, and two pop-up vault experiences in Edinburgh and Glasgow, with proceeds going to homelessness charity Crisis Scotland.
The design merges traditional banknote elements with the imagery of the moment that ended Scotland’s long wait for major tournament football.
McTominay’s overhead kick came early in a 4-2 win over Denmark at Hampden Park in November, the goal that set the tone for a night that delivered Scotland to the World Cup for the first time since France 1998.
Commenting on the iconic goal, Scott McTominay said: “Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans.”
He continued: “Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special.”
The online auction runs until 11:00 on Friday 26 June, with the prize draw closing at the same time.
The two pop-up vaults will offer fans the chance to guess a combination to unlock one of the limited edition notes.
Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, said McTominay’s strike already sits among the country’s most cherished goals.
Speaking about the feat achieved by McTominay, Noble commented: “Securing qualification in such dramatic fashion is a moment fans will never forget, and we wanted to mark it in a way that’s rooted in Scottish identity.”
She continued: “Like football, banknotes have long been part of our country’s story, and this limited edition £20 note combines those two traditions with a modern, creative twist.”
For Scott McTominay, the recognition caps an extraordinary period since leaving Old Trafford.
Sold to Napoli in the summer of 2024, the midfielder has become a central figure in Italian football, winning the Serie A MVP and Player of the Season in his debut campaign.
Now, he finds his most iconic international moment immortalised on Scottish currency.
It is, by any measure, an unusual second act for a player whose United exit divided opinion at the time.
Scotland kick off their World Cup against Haiti in Boston on 14th June, before facing Morocco at the same venue on 19th June and Brazil in Miami on 24th June.
The tournament, expanded to 48 teams, runs from 11th June to 19th July across 16 cities in the US, Canada and Mexico.
