Tottenham Hotspur have made some horrific deals over the years under the ownership of ENIC. Daniel Levy, the former chairman, approved plenty of big-money deals that have flopped at White Hart Lane.
The past summer transfer window was Daniel Levy’s last window as the club’s chairman having resigned from his post at the start of September, as Tottenham chose to shake up personnel at boardroom level. Under him, the club spent over £180m in the summer transfer window to back new head coach Thomas Frank.
The North London club’s focus was on reinforcing the attack which led to the arrivals of Xavi Simons, Mohammed Kudus and Randal Kolo Muani. Mathys Tel’s loan from Bayern Munich was also turned into a permanent deal. Kevin Danso’s loan from RC Lens automatically became permanent on June 1, while young Kota Takai was signed from Kawasaki Frontale to further bolster the defence.
However, bar Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha, the rest of the summer signings have not lived up to the lofty expectations at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium thus far.
It is clear Thomas Frank has not got the quality and depth in his Tottenham squad to challenge for the top four spots in the Premier League. Spurs are spiralling downwards in the Premier League table, and Frank must address the deficiencies quickly to retain his job.
Now, TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has delivered his opinion on Tottenham’s current struggles. He claims Spurs are not a good side at the moment and have several players to have not lived up to their billing.
“Spurs to me at the moment are not a good side. They’re not a good side they’ve got a group of players that with due respect to Daniel aren’t as good as they could be. For the money that’s been spent their achievements aren’t where they need to be.”
Spurs huffed and puffed throughout the summer for a creative midfielder before landing Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig. Highly-rated across Europe, Xavi has been underwhelming for the North Londoners, to say the least. The Netherlands international has struggled with the pace and physicality of the Premier League, failing to influence games in the final third as per his liking.
This has resulted in the 22-year-old being benched in the last three games, with Frank opting for a change in formation and personnel to arrest the team’s slide. However, the results have not improved one bit.
Xavi is not the only big-money player who has struggled at Tottenham. Levy’s decision to shatter the club’s transfer record last year on striker Dominic Solanke is yet to pay off. Solanke has not started a game this season due to persistent ankle issues, leaving the gaffer with Richarlison and Kolo Muani as the only No.9 options. The transfer mishaps happening all these years shows why Simon Jordan is not wrong in his assessment of the current Tottenham squad.
