‘So much energy’ – Is this rising Tottenham star the new Dele Alli?

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank keen to curb key trait in Lucas Bergvall

Tottenham Hotspur have quite a few high-ceiling talents in the current roster, and among them is 19-year-old Swede Lucas Bergvall. He has been playing some high-profile football since he moved to Tottenham from Djurgården.

We have seen him become one of the first names in the squad in such a short space of time (and that is not only down to his talent and high ceiling but also to the fact that he has been impacting games for the North Londoners even now).

The Sweden international had 45 appearances to his name in his debut season for the North Londoners. And he kicked off the new season on a high with a goal and an assist to his name in that 3-0 win over West Ham. His influence also continued in Europe, given how his clever run helped force the decisive own goal.

Thomas Frank praises Lucas Bergvall

And Thomas Frank has heaped praise on the teenager, speaking about how he brings that boundless energy to the table for the Lilywhites. The Dane also spoke on the fact that Bergvall needs to use that energy more effectively. He said (in his press conference)

“He has got so much energy that sometimes you need to say, pause, stop, don’t run when we have the ball and find the higher, the more dangerous positions.”

There are two recent examples showing how his energy has helped Tottenham get an upper hand. One was that deep run into the box that allowed him to score against the Hammers. Another is the one last week against the Yellow Submarines, where a well-timed push directly ended up handing that match-winning own goal.

Frank is in a way looking to suggest that the Swede doesn’t need to cover every blade of grass, but instead he needs to time his runs smartly. He wants to ensure that Tottenham can end up getting the most out of his knack of arriving in decisive areas with his runs.

Bergvall has that Dele Alli gene…

This ability to run can help the Dane in multiple dynamics in the middle of the park. Watching him and then reading these words from Frank takes you back to a certain Dele Alli and how he once thrived under Mauricio Pochettino by timing his late runs into the box (exactly something that the former Bees coach looks to be suggesting).

With Bergvall, he does possess that raw ability to do something similar (to Alli) in Frank’s current setup. He can do so by understanding the how and when of pressing intensity off the ball, alongside that knack for arriving in dangerous spots when Tottenham are in possession.
