Tottenham suffered a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland, as Roberto De Zerbi began his managerial tenure at the North London club. A deflected Mukiele strike in the 61st minute was enough to earn the Black Cats all three points, even as Tottenham were left reeling at 18th place in the PL table.
After a rather positive start, and a penalty decision overturned, Tottenham let Sunderland grow into the game, and it ended up being disastrous for De Zerbi and his men. The match also saw their captain, Cristian Romero, walk off the field in tears after a rather nasty incident in the 64th minute.
Just as Brian Brobbey was vying for the ball with Romero, the former shoved him while challenging for the ball, and in turn, the Argentine crashed into the onrushing Antonin Kinsky. While Kinsky was banged in the head by Romero’s knee, it was the 27-year-old who was the worst affected, as he was forced off the field, covering his face (in tears).
This elicited numerous angry reactions from Tottenham fans on Twitter.
Tottenham fans were livid with what they saw happen to their captain. Here are some of the reactions:

A fan called out the PGMOL:
AGENDA … PGMOL filthy corruption
— Basil (@Foxy704578) April 12, 2026
Referee corrupt or incompetent ?
— Paul Allen (@pauljallen) April 12, 2026
I’m a fan of neither team but Brobbey knew exactly what he was doing with that shove and Don Goodman was talking absolute gold plated bollocks.

Another fan brought up the alleged double-standards had it been Cristian Romero himself on the giving end, instead of Brobbey:
Romero get 6 game ban.
— Jonny Wallace (@J_Wallace_84) April 12, 2026
Tottenham will be hoping that Romero recovers soon enough to be fit for the rest of their games. It is being reported that there is some instability in his knee, as of now.
