Sydney FC officially sign Manchester United defender

Manchester United supporters have already been given plenty to worry about defensively this season.

Michael Carrick’s side have played three competitive games so far, losing 2-0 to Hull City, beating Ipswich Town 5-2 and drawing 2-2 away at Everton.

That is six goals conceded against, with respect, opposition United would have expected to control far better.

The concern is hardly new either.

Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez have all been at Old Trafford for several seasons and have each been part of United sides on the receiving end of some damaging defeats.

The club have spent heavily trying to reshape other areas.

United revamped their attack last summer before making major changes in midfield this year, but the defence has not received the same level of surgery.

A new left-back was particularly wanted during the summer window, yet no deal was completed, leaving Carrick to work with many of the same options.

That makes any defensive movement involving United naturally interesting, particularly when another club officially announces the arrival of one of their defenders.

Sydney FC officially sign Manchester United full-back

Sydney FC have announced on their official website that James Overy has joined the club from Manchester United on a three-year contract.

The 18-year-old right-back returns to Australia after two years in United’s academy system, having originally emerged with Perth Glory before moving to England.

His route has been unusual.

After relocating with his family, Overy spent time playing senior football for Newton Abbot Spurs before United moved for him in 2024, with several Premier League clubs also interested.

Overy has also represented Australia at youth level, featured at the Under-20 World Cup and earned involvement with the senior Socceroos squad.

Sydney FC will now give him a clearer route into regular senior football, with Patrick Kisnorbo’s side viewing him as a player capable of developing quickly in the A-League.
