The best World Cup performance for every 2026 World Cup team

The 2026 World Cup has expanded the field to 48 countries. We have some of the giants of international football (but not Italy), but also some nations in their first World Cup. Here is the best World Cup performance for all 48 nations to qualify in 2026. For the sake of clarity we’re going group by group, which means we will be ending with Panama. On the other hand, it also means we’ll begin with Mexico!

Mexico

Mexico
National Team Logo

Mexico is one of three nations hosting this World Cup, which means football at Estadio Azteca, which is cool. Maybe history is going to repeat itself. The country has made the quarterfinals twice, in 1970 and 1986. Both of those years the World Cup was held in Mexico. In 1990 Mexico was banned from the World Cup, though, so we will call 1970 the peak for the nation.

South Africa

South Africa
National Team Logo

South Africa hosted the World Cup in 2010. It didn’t go great, as it had one win, one draw, and one loss with a minus-2 goal differential. In 2002, South Africa properly qualified for the World Cup, and it also had one win, one draw, and one loss. That year, though, the country finished at zero in terms of goal differential.

South Korea

South Korea
National Team Logo

That 2002 World Cup was co-hosted by South Korea. The Koreans had qualified for the four prior World Cups, but had failed to win a single game. That changed in 2002. Korea made it out of the group stage, and then beat Italy and Spain en route to the semifinals. Eventually, the team would lose in the third-place game to Turkey, but it was still a wild ride.

Czech Republic

Czech Republic
National Team Logo

Some call it Czechia these days, but if you have Czech heritage you can get away with recognizing that “Czech Republic” looks and sounds so much better than “Czechia.” If we do not include Czechoslovakia, runners up in 1962, there’s no real choice here. The Czechs as a sovereign nation have only been to one other World Cup. In 2006 they picked up a win, but thanks to two losses were eliminated in the group stage.

5 of 48

Canada

Canada
National Team Logo

Canada is one of the co-hosts of this tournament, a first for the nation. While the Canadians have a tremendous hockey history, their soccer history is bleak. Canada has qualified for two World Cups, and has not won a game. In 2022 at least it scored two goals, though. Back in 1986, Canada allowed five goals and didn’t score once.

6 of 48

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina
National Team Logo

After the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina has played in one World Cup prior to 2026. It did okay, losing two games but then beating Iran 3-1. Edin Dzeko scored a goal against Iran, and he’s still playing with the Bosnian national team.

7 of 48

Qatar

Qatar
National Team Logo

By some measures, Qatar is the worst team in this tournament. This was also the case in 2022, the country’s first World Cup. Qatar was there because Qatar was the host for, you know, reasons. Even with quite the home-country advantage (the World Cup was moved to the winter because of the extreme heat in the country) the Qatar team lost three games with a minus-6 goal differential.

8 of 48

Switzerland

Switzerland
National Team Logo

The Swiss have been in several World Cups, but rarely go deep. Switzerland has made the quarterfinals three times, though not since 1954. Every single time it has finished, fittingly, with a neutral goal differential. We’ll say 1938 was the best performance. In 1954 it was the home country, and in 1934 it made the quarterfinals while playing only two games. It was a smaller tournament back then.

9 of 48

Brazil

Brazil
National Team Logo

Eventually, we were going to get to a team that has won the World Cup. Brazil has done more than simply win the biggest soccer tournament there is, though. The country has won the World Cup a whopping five times, the most in history. We will say 2002 was Brazil’s best tournament. That year is one of the two times it went undefeated, but it played seven games that year instead of six. Also, Brazil had a plus-14 goal differential, the best of any of the five title-winning teams.

10 of 48

Morocco

Morocco
National Team Logo

African nations had hit a ceiling in the World Cup, but Morocco lifted that ceiling in 2022. While not a traditional powerhouse on the continent, Morocco became the first African team to make the World Cup semifinals. Though it ended up finishing fourth, that was a history-making fourth.

11 of 48

Haiti

Haiti
National Team Logo

This is another straightforward one. Haiti has been in one prior World Cup. In 1974 it played in what was then West Germany. Haiti lost three games, scored two goals, and allowed 14. Here’s hoping 2026 goes a bit better for the island nation.

12 of 48

Scotland

Scotland
National Team Logo

Though Scotland, as part of the United Kingdom, has a long history with soccer, it also had suffered a long World Cup drought. This is the first time Scotland will appear in the World Cup since 1998. The best tournament for Scotland was 1974. Now, the nation didn’t play elegant soccer. The Scots only scored three goals in three games, but it only allowed one. Scotland finished with a win and two draws, but didn’t get out of the group stage.

United States

United States
National Team Logo

The United States is the third and final host nation, and the one with the most pressure. This is as talented as any American team has been, and it will get to play essentially every game in its home country. The U.S. did once finish third in a World Cup, but that was the very first World Cup in 1930. Hey, it still counts.

14 of 48

Paraguay

Paraguay
National Team Logo

Paraguay is not one of the giants of South American football, but in 2010 it went on quite a run. You may remember that run for a specific reason. That year, Paraguay made it to the quarterfinals. Notably, though, it then proceeded to fail to qualify in the next three World Cups prior to this one.

15 of 48

Australia

Australia
National Team Logo

Moving to the AFC from Oceania’s footballing confederation has benefited Australia. This is the sixth World Cup in a row that Australia has qualified for, and the 2022 World Cup was the Socceroos’ best. That was one of two years when the nation made it to the round of 16, but in 2022 it won two games for the first time.

16 of 48

Turkey

Turkey
National Team Logo

Somewhat surprisingly, this is only the third time Turkey has qualified for the World Cup. Part of what makes that surprising is that the country has not lacked for talent, and part of it is how well things went last time. Turkey hasn’t been in a World Cup since 2002, but that year it finished third.

17 of 48

Germany

Germany
National Team Logo

Here’s another country that has won multiple World Cups. Germany has three of them, though two of them were as West Germany. As such, let’s call the 2014 World Cup win, when Germany was unified, the best tournament for the team. That year Germany was undefeated, so it’s a strong choice.

18 of 48

Curacao

Curacao
National Team Logo

We have a debutante! The island, a constituent country of the Netherlands, has only competed as Curacao since 2014. If three CONCACAF nations hadn’t been named joint hosts of the World Cup, Curacao may not have had a chance. Instead, Curacao’s players get the chance to play Germany in a World Cup, which is very cool.

19 of 48

Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast
National Team Logo

The Ivory Coast has, at times, been home to some of the best footballers in the world. And yet, the country’s World Cup history has been lackluster. Prior to 2026, Ivory Coast had qualified from 2006 through 2014, but in no other World Cup. It has also never made it out of the group stage. In 2010 the country had a win and a draw, making that its best tournament of the bunch.

20 of 48

Ecuador

Ecuador
National Team Logo

Ecuador did not make a World Cup until the new millennium, but since then has been a common sight in the tournament. One time, the nation made it out of the group stage. In 2006, Ecuador got into the round of 16, but stalled out at that point. At least it finished with a positive goal differential. Plus-1 is positive!

21 of 48

Netherlands

Netherlands
National Team Logo

The Dutch are the quintessential bridesmaids. On three occasions, the Netherlands has been the runner-up, but it has never won the World Cup. The 1974 team led by icon Johan Cruyff was the best team of the three, and gave the best performance. Sure, the 2010 team won six games while the 1974 team had five wins and one draw. The 1974 team scored 15 goals and only allowed three, two in the final against West Germany.

22 of 48

Japan

Japan
National Team Logo

After never making the World Cup, Japan has now made it eight times in a row. In each of the last two World Cups, the team has made the round of 16. In fact, Japan has now been in the round of 16 four times. Three times Japan has been 2-1-1, and twice it had a plus-two goal differential. In 2002 it was at home, though, and in 2010 it was in South Africa. As such, the 2010 team impressed us more.

23 of 48

Sweden

Sweden
National Team Logo

The power of being at home for an international soccer tournament. Sweden has finished third in two World Cups, but one year it was the runner-up. That was in 1958, when Sweden lost to Brazil in the final. This was also the one time Sweden has hosted the World Cup. That certainly worked out well for what is not a traditional behemoth in the sport.

24 of 48

Tunisia

Tunisia
National Team Logo

Tunisia has made six World Cups, but only has three wins. Twice the team has had one win and one draw. The 1978 World Cup team for Tunisia is the way to go for us, because we aren’t exactly looking for dull soccer. In 2022 Tunisia was 1-1-1, but it also scored a single goal and allowed a single goal.

25 of 48

Belgium

Belgium
National Team Logo

Belgium’s fabled “golden generation” never win a World Cup, or even made it to a final. That doesn’t mean it was a failure, though. In 2018, Belgium won six games and had a plus-10 goal differential. It finished third. Sure, Belgium lost 1-0 in the semis to France, the eventual champions, but that was an impressive tournament most countries would love to have on their resumé.

26 of 48

Egypt

Egypt
National Team Logo

The 1990 World Cup is the only real choice for Egypt. In 1934 it played in one game, a loss. In 2018 the Egyptians lost all three of their games. At least in 1990 the team didn’t lose every game. Now, Egypt didn’t win any games, but it picked up two draws.

27 of 48

Iran

Iran
National Team Logo

Uncertainty swirling around the Iranian squad aside, we shall delve into the World Cup history of the nation. This is the fourth World Cup in a row for the country. The trip to Russia in 2018 went the best, as it is the only time the team didn’t finish with a negative goal differential, and it picked up a win and a draw.

28 of 48

New Zealand

New Zealand
National Team Logo

Once Australia dipped out to play alongside Asian nations, New Zealand became the bullies on the block in Oceania. Of course, New Zealand has also only been to two World Cups prior to 2026. In 1982 it got rolled, but in 2010 things went reasonably well. New Zealand played in three games, and managed three draws. Hey, no losses!

29 of 48

Spain

Spain
National Team Logo

When a country has won a single World Cup, this question answers itself. In 2010, when Spain was also in the midst of being a force in Euros, it won its only World Cup to date. It wasn’t elegant, as eight goals for and two goals against in seven games indicates, but a win is a win, and nobody from that team is going to feel bad the games weren’t beautiful.

Cape Verde

Cape Verde
National Team Logo

Another newbie! Cape Verde was folded into Portugal until 1974. Then, it wasn’t a member of FIFA until 1986. Then, it didn’t bother entering World Cup qualifying until 2002. After that, Cape Verde struggled to qualify, but in 2026, the small island nation off the coast of Africa qualified. Congratulations.

31 of 48

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia
National Team Logo

It’s as easy to pick Saudi Arabia’s best World Cup as its worst World Cup. The worst was 2002 when it scored zero goals and allowed 12. We’re not trying to dunk on the Saudis, but that’s one of the worst tourneys a nation has ever had. In 1994, though, Saudi Arabia made the round of 16 for the first and only time.

32 of 48

Uruguay

Uruguay
National Team Logo

Uruguay are, of course, two-time winners. It hosted, and won, the first World Cup. Fair enough. It’s 1950, though, that is the iconic win. Uruguay went to Brazil, and played Brazil in the final. It won it in one of the most-fabled wins in the history of football. Sure, that was a long time ago now, but it still resonates.

33 of 48

France

France
National Team Logo

France has been on quite a run. It was the runner-up in the last World Cup, and it won the 2018 World Cup. However, the country’s best tournament was in 1998. Sure, France was the host nation. The French team also went 6-1-0 with 15 goals scored and only two allowed. That was a remarkable, dominant tournament.

34 of 48

Senegal

Senegal
National Team Logo

Senegal was considered part of France during the first several World Cups, so we have a bit of colonizer bad blood to be played out in this group. Senegal, while often yielding some of the best African talent in the world, has only been to three World Cups. Its first World Cup was 2002, and that was also its best performance. That year Senegal went to the quarterfinals.

35 of 48

Iraq

Iraq
National Team Logo

This is straightforward, because 2026 is only the second appearance for Iraq in the World Cup. The only appearance to date for the country was in 1986. It lost all three games, so Iraq is still looking for its first point in a World Cup.

36 of 48

Norway

Norway
National Team Logo

With Erling Haaland (and Martin Odegaard), Norway may have made this World Cup even without the expanded field. With 48 teams in the mix, Norway was all but a lock. This is the country’s first World Cup since 1998, while also happens to be its best World Cup run. Norway went to the round of 16 for the second time, but the first time was in 1938…when 15 teams participated.

37 of 48

Argentina

Argentina
National Team Logo

Argentina is the defending World Cup champion, but was the country’s third title its best? The run in 1986 featured six wins and a draw, but it also featured a famous missed handball. In 2022, it seemed for a second like Argentina might not make it out of the group stage. Ultimately, the 1978 win when Argentina was the host nation stands as the best of the bunch.

38 of 48

Algeria

Algeria
National Team Logo

Algeria has been to four World Cups. Two went quite poorly. Two went well. You could argue that in 1972 Algeria actually played better than in 2014, but in 2014 Algeria got out of the group stage and in 1972 it didn’t. Thus, 2014 is the choice.

39 of 48

Austria

Austria
National Team Logo

Three “A” teams in one group! Austria used to be one of the best footballing nations. It’s just that most people alive today were not around for that. For example, in 1954 the Austrian side finished third. It’s true, and the team played exciting football as well. Austria scored 17 goals and allowed 12 in five contests. The beautiful game, indeed.

40 of 48

Jordan

Jordan
National Team Logo

Another first-time World Cup team! Jordan did not attempt to qualify for a World Cup until the 1986 tournament. From 1986 until 2026, though, Jordan did not qualify. Now, finally, it has, and we shall see how Jordan does.

41 of 48

Portugal

Portugal
National Team Logo

Portugal have been frequent underachievers internationally. This is the seventh World Cup in a row for Portugal, but it has only made the quarterfinals twice in that time, and the semifinals once. However, the best tournament for the nation was back in 1966, when it finished third.

42 of 48

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Democratic Republic of the Congo
National Team Logo

This is the first World Cup for this team under the name “Democratic Republic of the Congo.” The nation used to be known as Zaire at the behest of dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. The ousting of Seko’s regime and the name change actually took place while the nation’s soccer team was trying to qualify for the 1998 World Cup. Back in 1974, the Zaire team made the World Cup, and had one of the worst performances ever. It lost three games, allowed 14 goals, and scored zero.

43 of 48

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan
National Team Logo

One last first-timer! Uzbekistan was, of course, part of the Soviet Union for many years. It gained independence and became a FIFA member in the lead-up to the 1998 World Cup. All these years later, Uzbekistan has qualified for its first World Cup.

44 of 48

Colombia

Colombia
National Team Logo

No question about this one. Colombia started the 2014 World Cup on quite the run. It won its first four games to set up a quarterfinal matchup with Brazil. Brazil won that one 1-0, but Colombia finished that World Cup with a plus-8 goal differential.

45 of 48

England

England
National Team Logo

Here is the last team to have won a World Cup. England has also only won a single World Cup. As such, there is no question here. England won the 1966 World Cup. That was England’s best World Cup. Duh.

46 of 48

Croatia

Croatia
National Team Logo

Croatia was part of Yugoslavia through the 1990 World Cup, and it didn’t get a chance to qualify until 1998. Since then, though, the Croatians have been a quiet force in international football. Croatia has finished in third place twice, and in 2018 it was the runner-up to France.

47 of 48

Ghana

Ghana
National Team Logo

Ghana has made five of the last six World Cups, making it one of the best African sides of the last two decades. The 2010 campaign went particularly well. Ghana made the quarterfinals, which remains quite rare for an African team.

48 of 48

Panama

Panama
National Team Logo

We end with Panama, and we end with a whimper. Hey, we can’t deny the reality of the situation. Panama has only been to one prior World Cup. In 2018 it lost three games with a minus-9 goal differential. Hey, maybe 2026 will be different. That’s the dream!
