Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney shared his reflections on the club’s loss to Arsenal in the Premier League opener.

Despite a solid display, Ruben Amorim’s side could not overcome the Gunners, whose project under Mikel Arteta is far more established.

Riccardo Calafiori’s first-half corner goal, following Altay Bayindir’s failed clearance of Declan Rice’s delivery, secured Arsenal a 1-0 victory.

But it was something different than the Turkish goalkeeper’s failure that left the former Man United No. 10 concerned.

Ruben Amorim went with a two-man midfield of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in Manchester United’s defeat to Arsenal.

After the arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Matheus Cunha from Wolves, Bruno Fernandes has moved into a deeper role for United.

The United captain played the full match against Arsenal, while Casemiro was replaced by Manuel Ugarte in the 65th minute.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, produced by BBC Sport, the former striker said:

“Still, a concern for me in the middle of the pitch, I think, with Casemiro and Bruno,” he said.

“I think they need more legs in there. I think Bruno [is] a fantastic player and I wanna see him a bit more higher up the pitch where he can be more creative and try and create and score more goals.

“And Casemiro, I just think we… we’re a little bit weaker in there in covering the full width of the pitch.”

Wayne Rooney questions Kobbie Mainoo’s role after United’s opening match of the season

Kobbie Mainoo was left on the bench for United’s season opener and did not get any minutes against Arsenal.

The 20-year-old had a promising breakthrough under Erik ten Hag but saw last season disrupted by injuries, which limited his opportunities to build on that early progress.

Rooney now questions whether Mainoo fits into Amorim’s plans and was surprised to see him still with the squad.

“So, yeah, I don’t know what has happened with Kobbie Mainoo,” he said.

“I think he’s… he looks like he’s not in the manager’s plans. But yeah, I think there’s so many positives from the game.”

United sit 15th in the Premier League after their opening defeat and will travel to Fulham next Sunday looking to pick up their first points of the campaign.
