Tottenham Hotspur had quite a busy 2025 summer transfer window as they oversaw several changes to their team. Important players like Joao Palhinha, Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, and Randal Kolo Muani joined up the team in this window, while others like Son Heung-Min and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg left.
One can argue that these new signings have significantly strengthened the Spurs team, but the Lilywhites will be competing for several titles this season, including the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. As a result, Thomas Frank will have to carefully manage his team to ensure its best performances in these competitions.
Despite the new additions to the team, there are concerns that the team does not have enough depth to compete for these big titles. The latest person to air such a sentiment has been the former Everton and Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness.
Talking to FootballInsider247, the former CEO expressed that he was expecting Tottenham to do more in the market:
“Yeah, I think there is an issue of depth, and I was underwhelmed by the Spurs’ transfer window.
“I expected Morgan Rogers to be a Spurs player. I expected another couple of marquee signings, and I expected Spurs to be up there with Arsenal and Liverpool in terms of expenditure.
“I really felt that they would push the boat out, but they didn’t, and I know the Spurs fans will be asking questions about that.
“Overall, it’s not a terrible window and they’ve added some quality players, but the lack of depth in the squad is a key thing.
“I have a lot of time for Thomas Frank. I think he’ll do well with them this year again through all the European football, and that’s where you need that depth.
In addition to the departure of Son Heung-Min, Spurs were also unfortunate to see another key player, James Maddison, suffer a long-term injury during the preseason. After having undergone surgery to recover from this issue, the Englishman is not expected to return to action this season. Similarly, Dejan Kulusevski is also set to remain out of action for some time with his own injury as well.
Keeping in view this situation of the team, there is a lot of merit in Keith Wyness’ words. For now, with the transfer market closed, Tottenham have no other option than to maximize the output from the players currently on their roster.
Meanwhile, there have been some reports of the North London side already making their plans to make moves for some of the players they missed out on during the summer transfer window. For now, it remains to be seen how these plans will pan out, and whether the team would be able to achieve its objectives with its current squad.
