Perhaps the most intriguing signing Manchester City made last summer was Rayan Cherki. The French international arrived at the club from Lyon. Unfortunately, Cherki suffered a thigh injury ahead of Manchester City’s defeat to Brighton at the end of August. That meant he missed eight games and further glimpses of what Cherki could add to Pep Guardiola’s side were delayed.
The attacking midfielder returned to the pitch during the latter stages of Manchester City’s 2-nil win over Everton on Saturday. He provided a tantalising glimpse of his special talent while on the pitch at the Etihad Stadium. Of course, Cherki’s cameo performance has to be put into context. It came against an opponent that was beaten, but come the final whistle, you did sense that City have a player who could be a difference maker once he is match fit and acclimatised to his new club.
Rayan Cherki came on in the 85th minute of Manchester City’s win over Everton. Including stoppage time, he played 13 minutes at the Etihad. In those minutes, Cherki’s tremendous talent and vision were on full display. He ghosted around the pitch, and his one-touch passing and link-up with his teammates was impressive. Yes, Cherki’s cameo appearance came against a tired and defeated Everton side. But his tremendous ability stood out. There was one pass in particular that stood out and showed exactly what the French playmaker will bring to Pep Guardiola’s side.
Rayan Cherki. Yes, he’s back.

Rayan Cherki earned himself a free kick on the halfway line during the closing stages of City’s win over Everton. He took the free kick himself and, in laconical fashion, he played a sumptuous through ball to Erling Haaland behind the Everton defence. The entire Everton defence was taken out of the play, and only a fine Jordan Pickford save denied Haaland a hat trick and Cherki an assist. That one pass showed exactly what Cherki will add to Pep Guardiola’s side once he begins playing regularly.

Rayan Cherki can potentially be the ultimate wildcard in the Manchester City lineup. As with Phil Foden, he is blessed with tremendous technical ability and the ability to spot and play a pass that many other players just can’t see and complete. There was a glimpse of something special at the Etihad on Saturday. It came from Rayan Cherki. The hope is that he can stay fit and show more of what he is capable of in Manchester City’s upcoming matches.
