Trent Alexander-Arnold is adamant about one thing when it comes to discussions over a potential new contract at Liverpool.
Along with Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah, the vice-captain’s current deal expires at the end of this season, with just 18 days remaining until non-English suitors are free to approach all three about a possible pre-contract agreement if they don’t pen new terms before then.
The Egyptian winger put the cat among the pigeons by publicly declaring after last month’s win over Southampton that he’d yet to be presented with an offer from the club (something which has since changed), a statement which prompted Jamie Carragher to criticise the 32-year-old for being ‘selfish’.
Trent insists contract talks will be kept private
While Salah was quite transparent about his desire to stay on at Liverpool, Trent has insisted that any negotiations over a prospective new contract for him will be kept very much private.
In an interview with Melissa Reddy for Sky Sports, the Reds’ vice-captain proclaimed: “I have been at the club 20 years now. I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public – and this one won’t be either.”
Trent keeping us guessing over his future
Trent’s insistence that his contractual affairs won’t be ‘played out in public’ keeps us guessing as to whether or not he’ll sign a new deal with his boyhood club.
Coincidentally, it was Reddy who earlier this week claimed that the 26-year-old’s renewal could be the most difficult of the three for Liverpool to pull off, partly because of the presence of ‘the biggest alternative option’ in Real Madrid.
In that same interview, the right-back spoke of how he was immediately impressed by Arne Slot’s ‘incredible’ attention to detail and obsession for football, and Reds fans will be hoping that the head coach’s outstanding reign so far might persuade the England international to commit for the long-term.
As reported by David Ornstein last weekend, Trent has been offered a new deal by the club. Their desire to retain him duly seems evident, so the burning question is whether the vice-captain will reciprocate that same loyalty and remain a one-club player beyond next summer.
It could be another few weeks until we get our answer, but until then we’ll stay positive and place our confidence in this ongoing saga having a happy ending.

Eddie Howe guided Newcastle United to a fifth-place finish in their 2024/25 Premier League campaign and won the EFL Cup, defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the final. He will be eager to strengthen his squad ahead of the club’s return to Champions League football, but the Magpies are struggling to keep hold of Alexander Isak, who looks destined to leave the club this summer. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Swede has rejected a move to Saudi Arabia, with Liverpool now the only club in concrete talks. Howe will be eager to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2025/26 season. According to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, Isak informed Newcastle of his desire to leave the club, with reports they are working on numerous deals, including Yoane Wissa from Brentford. Despite the latest developments, it appears Newcastle are hopeful they can persuade their star striker to stay, with manager Eddie Howe addressing the rumours: “There are no contract talks taking place with Alexander Isak. That will be for a later date, potentially,” said the Newcastle manager. “There are things going on behind the scenes. Whatever happens has to be for the best of the club.” “Of course, I hope Isak stays,” added Howe. Alexander Isak Replacement Options It appears likely that Isak will start the season at Anfield, which will be a blow to Newcastle United. Eddie Howe must sign the right replacement, and the club seem to be looking at various options, including Benjamin Sesko, Wissa and Lois Openda. The Magpies were reportedly interested in Joao Pedro, having a £50 million bid rejected before the Brazilian decided to join Chelsea, where he impressed immediately at the Club World Cup. Among the strikers linked, Sesko and Openda appear the most sensible options due to the attributes they share with Isak. However, don’t discount Wissa, who offers Premier League experience and a proven eye for goal.
'In what world does this make sense?’: Oilers and $63M forward
According to some, throw out the idea that the Edmonton Oilers should pursue Max Pacioretty. A veteran forward who has earned over $63 million over the course of his NHL career has yet to sign an NHL contract and was recently mentioned in a post by David Staples as a possible fit. In a recent post, the Journal noted, “All of the top NHL unrestricted free agents have already signed contracts, but there’s one big name player still available that makes good sense for the Edmonton Oilers to pursue.” Responses have been varied, with a few quite vocal about the Oilers not following Staples’ advice. “In what world does this make sense?????” writes a commenter on a recent post for The Hockey Writers. Another commenter wrote, “Pacioretty is a good journeyman player but he is injury prone now, late in his career. Oilers might be lucky to get 40 games out of him. They should look elsewhere instead of taking a chance on Patches.” Tyler Yaremchuk of Oilers Nation chimed in and said, “He scored five goals in 37 games last year with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Can’t stay healthy, very old, very slow.” Yaremchuk then went on a rant, listing several Oilers forwards who would be better than Pacioretty. What About Pacioretty on a PTO? Is there any reason that a team that is looking to get younger and faster, and move out depth pieces that were older and less productive than expected, would revert back to last summer’s strategy? It seems like an odd choice on the surface. Something would have to happen that would make giving Pacioretty a look risk-free. That means only a PTO. Even at that point, should he agree, it would require him to be willing to sign a two-way contract for the league minimum.
Athletics' Nick Kurtz makes MLB history vs. Astros
Athletics rookie first baseman Nick Kurtz already had an impressive start to his career. Kurtz entered Friday having posted a .288/.360/.622 batting line in 265 plate appearances, hitting 19 homers and 17 doubles. Despite making his major league debut on April 23, Kurtz has been the A's most valuable player, leading the team with 2.6 bWAR. He appeared to be on the cusp of becoming the superstar the A's needed to sell the team to the residents of Las Vegas. That performance set the stage for what may have been the most impressive game for any rookie in major league history. Kurtz became the 20th player in MLB history to have a four-home run game and the first rookie to achieve that feat. Kurtz's performance also put the 2025 season into baseball history. Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez had a four-home run game on April 26, making this the third time that there have been two four-homer games in a season. That had happened in 2002 (outfielders Mike Cameron and Shawn Green) and 2017 (utility man Scooter Gennett and left fielder J.D. Martinez). Kurtz did not stop with those four homers. He was 6-6 in the A's 15-3 victory over the Astros, with a double and eight runs batted in. The favorite to win the AL Rookie of the Year award, Kurtz put an emphatic stamp on an already impressive season with his barrage on Friday.
Trade rejection speaks volumes about Red Sox's Jarren Duran intentions
The Boston Red Sox appear to have no interest in trading outfielder Jarren Duran, at least not in the near future. Trade rumors have swirled around Duran for most of the season, especially after designated hitter Rafael Devers was traded to the Giants. However, Sean McAdam from MassLive reported that the Red Sox may wait until the offseason before moving on from the former All-Star. The decision to wait on Duran is not due to a lack of offers. McAdam also reported that the Padres made a significant offer for Duran involving pitcher Dylan Cease, catching prospect Ethan Salas and another unnamed prospect. That offer was quickly rejected. The Padres have long coveted Duran. McAdam had previously reported that the Padres have been "relentless" in their pursuit of the Red Sox outfielder. The reported trade offer including Salas, the Padres second-best prospect and the 21st-best prospect in baseball per MLB.com, illustrates how serious they are about acquiring Duran. Likewise, the Red Sox's refusal to entertain such an offer, even as a starting point for negotiations, speaks volumes about their interest in moving Duran. The Padres' offer would help solve several problems for the Red Sox in both the present and future. Moving Duran would help clear up the logjam in the outfield, while Cease and Salas would respectively improve the back of their rotation and provide a possible cornerstone behind the plate going forward. Duran is a valuable trade chip as he is under team control through 2028. He has also taken a step back in production from his stellar showing in 2024, posting a respectable .254/.321/.428 batting line in 459 plate appearances entering Friday, with nine homers and 25 doubles while stealing 16 bases. That production would be an upgrade for several teams looking to improve their outfield going forward. The question is whether or not the Red Sox will be realistic in their asking price for Duran. Considering how quickly the Padres' offer was reportedly rejected, that may not be the case.
