Tottenham Hotspur somehow managed to end last season on a high despite enduring an injury crisis for much of the campaign. The lack of squad depth eventually caught up with Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed despite guiding the Lilywhites to Europa League glory and ending their long wait for silverware. The persistent injury woes at N17 forced the Australian tactician to rely heavily on a limited group of players and hope for the best.
The same trend cannot be repeated under Thomas Frank this time around. The Danish tactician has no intentions of prioritising any one particular competition, and wants his team to compete on all fronts this season. That is the only way Spurs will have a chance of building on last season’s Europa League success and hopefully add more silverware to their trophy cabinet.
To achieve that goal, Frank would have to make sure his players are well-rested and fresh for crucial games during the festive period. Spurs have six games in the next sixteen days, starting with the Champions League fixture against AS Monaco. Managing this hectic schedule will require intelligent rotation to prevent fatigue and injuries from derailing their progress.
However, injuries are already threatening to become a concern once again. The Lilywhites currently have ten first-team players side-lined with ongoing fitness issues, which could test the club’s squad depth in the weeks to come. While this situation presents a challenge, it also gives Frank the opportunity to assess his squad options and identify areas that may need reinforcements in January.
Now, Thomas Frank has highlighted the importance of rotating the squad to keep everyone fresh and ready for crucial games. Speaking to Sky Sports, Frank said,
“Rotation I think is key. Two things… energy and freshness. Also keep the squad alive. So, it’s nice to have a core of players. Seven or eight are playing a lot. But you need a little bit of ongoing rotation, I think.”
Frank believes that rotating the players constantly maintains the energy on the field and it also gives an added layer of freshness to the squad. The Danish tactician does have a core group of players that play the majority of games, but there is a need for him to rotate the rest of the squad if he wants his team to carve out positive results consistently.
It goes without saying that Spurs will need more depth for the second half of the season. The upcoming January transfer window presents a great chance for the Lilywhites to bring in new players that would provide cover for Thomas Frank’s men, as well as, make an instant impact to help the North London club build on last season’s Europa League success. Fans will hope that Frank averts another injury crisis at N17 and keeps his key players fit and ready to go.
