Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank’s priority emerges ahead of the January transfer window

Thomas Frank’s brilliant start to life at Tottenham Hotspur has seen him pick up 10 points from opening five Premier League fixtures. This has seen his side climb up to third in the table.

Summer signings such as Joao Palhinha, Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons have all made an impact at White Hart Lane. Their contributions to the positive start to the new campaign has now put the onus back on the Hotspur Way chiefs to back Thomas Frank in January so that he can keep the team competitive in the second half of the season.

Spurs focused on signing new attackers to bolster the forward line during the summer transfer window but failed to address one of the pressing issues in the squad- a dynamic No.8.

Thomas Frank wants a new central midfielder in January

As such, according to a report from Football Insider, Thomas Frank’s priority is to still sign a new central midfielder when the transfer window reopens in January.

Tottenham are continuing to assess the situation of Conor Gallagher at Atletico Madrid, having failed to land him in the past transfer window. The 25-year-old has had a mixed start to the new season with the Spanish giants, having struggled to cement a regular starting berth. And if that continues to be the case, the England international could seek an exit – although that is unlikely to happen before next summer.

This is because Gallagher reportedly does not want to leave Atletico Madrid midway through the campaign as he is focused on establishing himself in Diego Simeone’s side rather than taking a punt ahead of next year’s World Cup. Atletico, meanwhile, remain reluctant to sell the midfielder and would demand a high fee for any mid-season trading, making a deal for Spurs complicated.

Frank currently has decent options in the middle of the park. However, with Pape Matar Sarr set to leave for the AFCON in mid-December and Yves Bissouma expected to push for a move away in the New Year, the Danish boss will require midfield reinforcements. The aforementioned report adds should Bissouma move on, there is a big possibility that the Malian international will be replaced in the squad.

Frank wants to reunite with Brentford midfielder

Tottenham have been scouring the market for midfielders and are not only limited to Gallagher. As per recent reports, the Lilywhites are interested in signing Brentford midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk. They are closely monitoring the youngster’s performances as part of their ‘long-term midfield planning’.

Frank previously worked with Yarmolyuk at Brentford and thus knows him in and out. As such, it is not surprising that the Tottenham gaffer wants to reunite with the Ukrainian international in north London. However, they could face competition from Manchester United for the services of the 21-year-old, who has started the new season strongly with the Bees under new coach Keith Andrews.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs test Brentford’s resolve for the Ukrainian starlet in the New Year.
